The add-ons module will display a product at the bottom of the cart with an On/Off toggle.
This module has two different modes, Shipping Protection and Product Add On.
You can learn how each of them works in this document.
Shipping Protection
π§ Important to Know
UpCart itself does not offer Shipping Protection services, it only creates a product for you to use in the add-ons module.
If you plan to use the Shipping Protection mode, please make sure you're aware that you will be providing the service. If one of your customers gets a lost or damaged package, they'll need to contact you directly to process a claim.
Include Add-ons in Cart Item Count
This setting can be found in both modes.
When checked, the add-on item will add to the cart's item count.
For example, in the image below the item count at the top of the cart says "2", because the cart contains two products. The Ocean Blue Shirt and the Shipping Protection add-on!
If unchecked, then it will be excluded from it instead!
For example, in the image below the item count at the top of the cart says "1", even though the cart contains two products. The Ocean Blue Shirt and the Shipping Protection add-on!
Add-on Title
This is the title of the product, you can change it to whatever you'd like!
For example, some people prefer using the term "Package Insurance".
Description
This is the description of the product, you can change it to whatever you'd like!
We recommend making sure the product description matches your brand's tone of voice.
Price
How much will you charge your customers for Shipping Protection services?
Let us know by filling out this field, and we'll set up the price for it!
On the right side, you'll see a currency selector. At this time, it will only give you the option to select your store's default currency.
However if you have Shopify Markets setup on your storefront, this price will still be converted to your customer's local currency by Shopify!
Offer is accepted by default
β οΈ Important: "Accept offer by default" will not work after February 17, 2025
To provide more trustworthy buyer experiences, Shopify is prohibiting apps from automatically adding non-free items. Buyers will need to explicitly accept add-ons by clicking the toggle. To learn more, see Section 1.19 of Shopify's app requirements.
If this toggle is turned OFF, your Shipping Protection add-on will need to be explicitly accepted by your customer.
If this toggle is turned ON, your Shipping Protection add-on will already be accepted by the customer as soon as they add their first item. Your customer can still decide to decline the Shipping Protection add-on by turning off the toggle on the cart.
π§ Not Working?
If you have this setting turned on but you aren't seeing it auto-accepted on your live store, this usually means that you had declined the addon in the past and UpCart remembers this.
To make UpCart forget, clear your browser's cookies for your site! This will delete the cookie that UpCart creates in order to remember your decision, making it so you have a fresh start.
Next refresh the page. You'll see that the cart is now empty.
The addon should now be automatically accepted the next time you add an item to your cart.
Still not working? Please contact UpCart Support with the chat widget on the bottom right of the app, and we'll do our best to help you!
Product Add On
Include Add-ons in Cart Item Count
This setting can be found in both modes.
When checked, the add-on item will add to the cart's item count.
For example, in the image below the item count at the top of the cart says "2", because the cart contains two products. The Ocean Blue Shirt and the Shipping Protection add-on!
If unchecked, then it will be excluded from it instead!

Select Product/Change Product
Depending on whether this is your first time using this mode or not, you'll see either a "Select" or a "Change" button.
In both scenarios, clicking on the button will open the product selection window.
This allows you to choose which product (and what variant) you want offered in the add-ons module.
Keep in mind since the add-ons module only has an on/off toggle, it's not possible to offer more than one variant.
Not only can you select a product, but you can also change one more thing!
On the bottom left, you'll notice there's a "Offer is accepted by default" toggle.
Read the next section to see what this does!
