What are naming conventions?
If your team uses a structured format for ad names (like TOFU_Video_Shirt_Testimonial), naming conventions let Raya parse those names and turn each segment into a filterable dimension in your analytics.
Once set up, you can answer questions like “Which formats work best at each stage of the funnel by product?” without building custom reports from scratch.
How it works
Raya uses a position-based system. Each segment of your ad name, separated by a character like “_” or “-”, maps to a dimension. For example, if your ad name is:
VID-MONEYSAVING_BEST_V01
Position | Dimension | Example value |
Position 1 | Creative Name | VID-MONEYSAVING |
Position 2 | CTA | BEST, SIMILAR, R2 |
Position 3 | Funnel Stage | V01, Toilet Gel, Image |
Raya will automatically detect patterns in your ad names, so most of the setup is just confirming that she got it right.
How to set it up
1. Go to the Analytics tab and select your ad account.
2. Click Naming convention in the top nav bar (between the Overview/Radar tabs and the date range selector).
3. If this is your first time, you’ll be prompted to set up your convention. If you already have one, click Edit naming convention to make changes.
4. Define your separator (the character that splits your ad name into segments, like Underscore (_) or Hyphen (-)).
5. Map each position. Raya will auto-detect your positions and show example values from your actual ad names. Label each dimension (e.g., Creative Name, CTA, Funnel Stage) and add as many positions as your naming convention requires.
6. Click Confirm. Your ad name dimensions will now appear throughout your analytics.
✨ Pro tip: Raya auto-detects your naming patterns, so setup usually takes about 30 seconds. Just verify the positions and confirm.
Using naming conventions in your analytics
Once your naming convention is set up, your ad name dimensions become available across your analytics:
Custom reports: Group and filter your data by any naming convention dimension. Click Dimension filter and expand Ad name dimensions to see all your mapped positions (Stage, Format, Product, Theme, etc.).
Ask Raya: Raya automatically uses your naming convention data when answering questions and building reports. Ask her something like “Compare ROAS by funnel stage for video ads” and she’ll use your dimensions.
Slack reports: Naming convention dimensions carry through to any scheduled Slack reports.
For example, if you want to find out which creative formats perform best at each funnel stage:
1. Create a custom report or open an existing one.
2. Click Dimension filter and select your Stage dimension.
3. Add a second dimension for Format.
4. Toggle the metrics you care about (ROAS, CPA, etc.) and compare.
FAQ
What separators are supported?
Any single character works as a separator. The most common are underscore (_), hyphen (-), and pipe (|).
What if my ad names aren’t consistent?
Naming conventions work best when your ad names follow a consistent structure. If some ads don’t follow the pattern, those ads won’t have values for the missing positions. They’ll still appear in your reports, just without dimension data.
Can I set up different naming conventions for different ad accounts?
Yes. Naming conventions are configured per ad account, so each account can have its own structure.
Can I change my naming convention after setting it up?
Yes. Click Naming convention in the top nav, then Edit naming convention to update your separator or position mappings. You can also click Remove to delete the convention entirely and start over.
Are non-position-based naming conventions supported?
Not yet. Raya currently supports position-based naming convention structures only (where each segment maps to a fixed position). Key-value or other formats are not supported at this time.
Do naming conventions work with Raya’s reports?
Yes. Raya automatically includes your naming convention dimensions in any report she generates. Your AI tags and naming convention data both pull into reports.
