Creating Text Messages within Atticus

Overview

Use the Text Message option to showcase text conversations between characters in your book. A text conversation in Atticus comprises messages exchanged between characters, with optional sender names.

Adding a Text Conversation

To start a text message:

  • You can highlight the text (be sure to include the entire conversation) and click the text bubble in the toolbar.

  • Or click the text bubble and type your message directly into the bubble.

Configuring Text Messages

Use the options on the left side of the bubble to control whether the message is incoming, outgoing, or to add the sender’s name.

The sender’s name will always be associated with the text bubble that immediately follows.

Text messages can contain text only, and formatting options will be limited.

Text Message Themes

Click the cog near the top right corner of the text messaging element to choose your theme.

You can choose from:

  • iOS - iOS

  • iOS - Android

  • Android

A note on emojis

We don’t recommend using emojis in your formatting because there is no way to guarantee how these symbols will appear across devices and apps. Most devices and platforms can’t display emojis - Kindle and Nook will not display emojis, and Kobo will only display emojis on mobile apps, but not on devices. Apple Books and Google Play will typically display emojis.

Emojis also will not embed into your PDF file.

Emoticon Alternatives

Emoticons are a sequence of keyboard symbols that represent facial expressions such as :-) for a smiley face.
