What do I enter for the Bank Account Name when linking my 529 plan?

Enter the Backpack account owner’s name when asked for the bank account name.

When you're linking your Backpack account to your 529 plan, you may be asked to provide a "Bank Owner Name" or "Account Holder Name." In this case, you'll enter the name of the person who created the Backpack account - typically the 529 Plan owner, parent, guardian.

Here's why:

Backpack accounts are personal checking accounts created in the name of the person who signs up (usually the parent or guardian). That person is considered the “owner” of the Backpack account and should match what you enter in your 529 plan when setting up the transfer.

Example:

If John Smith creates the Backpack account to pay for his daughter Emma’s tuition, the bank account name you’d enter in the 529 plan is John Smith.
