Do not track option for embedded YouTube videos

How to improve privacy when using YouTube videos with Video Time

Updated over 2 months ago

When embedding a YouTube video into a Video Time activity, the standard YouTube link allows YouTube to track viewers using cookies and other analytics tools.
To avoid this and provide a more privacy-friendly experience, you can use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode.

Use the “No Cookie” YouTube Link

YouTube offers a special version of video links that disables personalized tracking.
These links use the domain youtube-nocookie.com.

  1. Go to the YouTube video you want to embed.

  2. Click Share, then select Embed.

  3. In the embed options, check the box "Enable privacy-enhanced mode".

  4. Copy the src URL from the embed code — it will look like this:
    https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID

  5. Convert that to a regular link by replacing /embed/ with /watch?v=:
    https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID

  6. Paste this URL into the Video Time activity’s video URL field.

Note: Privacy-enhanced mode prevents YouTube from storing information about visitors unless they interact with the video.

Notes

  • This only affects tracking and cookies.

  • The video will still stream from YouTube servers, and usage may still be subject to YouTube’s standard service behavior.

Use this method if your organization prioritizes GDPR compliance or wants to avoid 3rd-party tracking in educational settings.
