Using global search to find Video Time content

Searching for title, desription and transcript of videos embedded with Video Time

Updated over 2 months ago

With global search enabled in Moodle, users can search for keywords or phrases in the title, description, or transcript of Video Time activities. This makes it easy to discover relevant content and jump directly to the course, activity, or even to specific points within a video where subtitles appear.

How Search Results Are Displayed

  • If found in the title or description:

    • You get a direct link to the Video Time activity

    • You also get a link to the course where the video is embedded

  • If found in the transcript (Premium only):

    • The result includes the exact timestamp in the video

    • You can jump directly to that point in the video

    • A link to the course where the activity is embedded is also provided

Note: Depending on your search term and the configuration of global search, your results may include other content, not just Video Time activities.

Requirements for global search

To find titles, descriptions, and transcripts using global search, this information must be indexed by Moodle.

Transcripts can only be indexed and appear in search results if the following conditions are met:

  • The Video Time activity embeds a Vimeo video that includes subtitles or closed captions

  • The transcript tab is enabled in the activity settings
If the transcript tab is disabled after indexing, global search can still find the transcript.

When both conditions are satisfied, Moodle’s global search will index the transcript content and make it searchable.

Video Time contributes to search indexing via two search areas:

  • Video Time – activity information (title and description)

  • Video Time – text track information (transcripts)

For more information about global search and indexing, refer to the official Moodle documentation.

Notes on playback behavior

  • If prevent fast forwarding is enabled, users cannot jump to the search result's timestamp of the transcript unless they’ve already watched up to that point.

  • If resume playback is enabled, the video will start from where the user last stopped, not from the clicked search result timestamp of the transcript.
