Overview

The table of contents (TOC) is a navigational aid in Content Designer that displays all chapters in a structured, interactive panel. It enhances usability for learners by allowing them to jump between chapters and track their progress.

You can configure the TOC directly from the content editor within a Content Designer activity. It is represented as the first grey bar.

Table of contents element settings

  • Intro text

This setting allows you to define an introductory message that appears above the table of contents in each new activity. It's intended to provide learners with context or navigation guidance.

Example: Welcome to this content designer module! Below is a breakdown of the chapters we’ll cover, organized for easy navigation. Use this table of contents to quickly access each chapter and keep track of your progress as you go.

  • Call to action

Enable a dynamic call-to-action button that changes depending on the learner's progress:

    • Start now – shown when no chapters have been completed; links to the first chapter.

    • Resume – shown when some chapters are completed; links to the next incomplete chapter.

    • Review – shown when all chapters are complete; links back to the beginning for review.

This feature encourages learners to pick up where they left off or reflect on completed content.

  • Sticky table of contents

This setting determines whether the TOC stays visible as the learner scrolls:

    • Disable – TOC remains in its default position.

    • Enable – TOC becomes sticky below the navigation bar while scrolling down.

    • Enabled when scrolling up – TOC only becomes sticky when the user scrolls up, which is less distracting during reading but still helpful for navigating backward.

  • Chapter titles in sticky state

Choose whether chapter titles should remain visible when the TOC is in sticky mode:

    • Visible – Titles always remain visible.

    • Hidden – Titles are never shown in sticky mode.

    • Hidden on mobile – Titles are hidden on smaller screens but shown on tablets and desktops.

  • Activity title in sticky state

Control the visibility of the activity title in the sticky TOC:

    • Visible – The activity title is always shown.

    • Hidden – The activity title is never shown.

    • Hidden on mobile – The title is hidden on smaller screens but shown on tablets and desktops.
