Getting started with Media Time

Introduction to Media Time with concise setup and configuration guide.

Updated over 2 months ago

About

Media Time is a Moodle plugin that provides a central media library for videos and audio files. Media resources can be managed at the site, category, or course level. The integrated repository makes them easily accessible for embedding in activities and courses.

With Media Time, you can:

  • Upload and manage media files directly in Moodle.

  • Integrate external video platforms such as Vimeo or Streamio.

  • Offer access to media libraries on site, category, and course level.

  • Embed media anywhere in Moodle using the repository with the standard file picker.

Note: Media Time is currently a release candidate. We’re actively developing new features and expanding its capabilities.

Install and configure Media Time

After installing the Media Time plugin, administrators can access its global settings under Site administration > Plugins > Admins tools > Media Time.

You need to enable at least one source plugin to make the creation of Media Time resources possible. Depending on your site setup, you can also connect external services like Vimeo or Streamio.

Note: The full integration with Vimeo requires Video Time Premium.

Manage Media Time resources

You can manage Media Time resources on three levels:

  • Site level
Go to Site administration > Reports > Reports > Media Time.

  • Category level
Go to Site administration > Courses > Manage courses and categories, open a category, and choose Media Time from the secondary menu.

  • Course level
Open a course and select Media Time from the secondary menu.

Resources are displayed as a library in a grid view showing their poster image, name, description, and tags.

Add and configure new resources

To add new media, open the block drawer on the right side of a Media Time library and select from the available resource types.

When creating or editing a resource, the following settings are available:

  • Resource name (mandatory)

  • Title (displayed when embedded)

  • Description

  • Tags

Depending on the selected resource type, additional options appear – for example, for uploading files or linking external videos.

Make media available via the Media Time repository

Media Time includes a repository integration that allows you to embed videos and audio files anywhere Moodle’s editor is available.

  1. Go to Site administration > Plugins > Repositories > Available Media Time resources.

  2. Click "Create repository instance".

  3. Add a name and configure the standard Moodle repository settings.

  4. Save your changes.

Note: Media Time currently supports only one repository instance with only Streamio and Video Time resources.

Manage permissions

Media Time provides a flexible permission system that lets you control who can upload, view, or manage media.

  • Administrators can review and adjust permissions.

  • Teachers can override permissions within their own courses if needed.
