Courses & Course Outlines

Learn about Courses in Bobbin here.

Written by Raashi Thakran

A Course in Bobbin organizes related Lessons into a structured learning program. Courses group lessons by subject area and connect specific Students with their Tutors across multiple sessions.

Every Lesson in the system belongs to a Course, making it easy to track progress and maintain consistency across teaching sessions.

Note: Coming from TutorCruncher?

In TutorCruncher, we call Courses "Jobs". When Bobbin is added to a Job, then you will be able to access it through this system. If your organization isn't connected to TutorCruncher, Administrators create and manage Courses directly in Bobbin - see this article for more details.

Course Outline

The Course Outline gives every Course a structured plan: a set of modules, each broken down into topics that Tutors and Administrators can tick off as they are covered.

You can start from a curriculum-aligned AI-built plan (matched to a Subject, Key Stage and Exam Board), or have AI generate a free-form plan from the Course description.

Once the plan is in place, you can edit it, regenerate it, leave feedback on it, track Course coverage as topics are completed, and review a log of the changes that have been made to it.

Creating a Course Outline

Open the Courses list

From the left-hand navigation, select Courses to see every Course in your organization.

Open a Course

Click the Course you want to plan. The Course detail page opens on the Course Outline tab. If no plan exists yet you will see two starting options:

  • Browse plans (curriculum-aligned templates)

  • Describe your own (free-form).

Browse curriculum-aligned plans

Click Browse plans to open the template browser. Use the Search, Subject, Key stage and Exam Board filters to narrow the list to the curriculum you want.

The browser opens on the plans for your organization's country, so the Subject, Key stage and Exam Board options you see match that curriculum. To teach from another country's curriculum, use the Country picker to switch - the other filters update to match the country you choose.

Preview a template

Select a template from the left-hand list. Its modules, module descriptions and topics appear on the right so you can confirm it matches what you want to teach before committing.

Apply the template to the Course

Click Use this template. The template is copied onto the Course as the active Course Outline, and the page refreshes to show Course Coverage, the full list of modules and topics, Learning Outcomes and Prerequisites.

Mark topics as covered

Tick the checkbox next to a topic to mark it as covered. Covered topics are shown with a strikethrough.

Track Course coverage

The Course Coverage bar at the top of the outline updates automatically as topics are ticked, showing the percentage of topics covered and the count out of the total.

Open the outline actions menu

Click the More button (the three dots) on the Course Outline header to access History (a read-only log of the changes made to the outline), Edit (modify the outline), change the template or describe your own.

Edit the outline

Choose Edit to enter editing mode. You can rename modules, reorder them, edit their descriptions, add or remove topics or Cancel without saving. Click Save Changes when finished.

Leave feedback on the plan

Use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons on the Course Outline header to record your view of the plan's quality. A short feedback dialog opens where you can optionally add a comment before clicking Submit feedback.

Note:

  • Course Outline is a beta feature. Curriculum-aligned plans are generated by AI against published Exam Board specifications - always review every module and topic before using with Students.

  • Both Tutors and Administrators can create, edit, regenerate and leave feedback on Course Outlines. Administrators always see every Course; Tutors see the Courses they teach.

  • Each Course has a single Course Outline, and your edits are made to it in place. Editing an AI-generated or template-based plan marks it as manually edited.

  • Regenerating a plan, or switching to a different template with Change template, replaces the whole set of modules and topics including anything you have edited. If a colleague regenerates the plan, your edits are replaced too, so agree who is looking after an outline before making changes.

  • The History menu item shows a read-only record of the changes made to the outline. It is a log for reference rather than something you can roll back.

Curricula available

Curriculum-aligned plans are available for several countries, and you can browse any of them using the Country picker in the template browser:

  • United Kingdom — primary and secondary subjects by Key Stage, with GCSE and A Level Exam Boards.

  • United States — including the ACT and SAT, which appear under Exam Boards.

  • Ireland — Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate subjects at Higher, Ordinary and Foundation level, plus primary maths, English and Irish across all four primary stages.

  • Australia — Australian curricula covering primary through to senior secondary.

If you don't see a curriculum you expect for a country, get in touch with the support team and we can check what's loaded for that region.

Course resources

You can attach files and folders from your document library to a Course, so the material you teach from sits alongside the Course Outline and is ready to open in the Lesson.

Tutors can see and use your organization's shared files and folders as well as their own library, and can attach them to the Courses they teach. Inside a live Lesson, the library panel gives Tutors access to the organization's shared files, the Course's own files and their personal library without leaving the whiteboard.

Every document and folder shows the name of the person who added it, and the documents list can be narrowed by author, upload date, whether a file is shared across the organization, and whether it sits in a folder. Each folder shows how many files it holds.

Assigned Lessons

You can see all of the Lessons linked to this Course by clicking the Lessons section of the Course.

When you create a Lesson from a Course, you can pre-select the objectives from the Course Outline that the Lesson should cover, and have Bobbin draft the Lesson plan from them.

If your organization uses TutorCruncher for scheduling, Administrators can also book Lessons on those Courses directly in Bobbin.
