Getting started with Bola and your EHR in 4 easy steps (Chrome extension)

Written by Martha Galewski

This article covers all the things you need to know to get started with voice charting with Bola and your EHR.

Table of contents:

1. Order a microphone

Before you can start using Bola, you need a mic that can be used to speak commands and dictate notes to Bola.

  • Check out our recommended mics and order a microphone that works best for you and your budget

2. Install the Bola Voice extension

1. Navigate here to download the Bola Chrome Extension

Recommendation:

We recommend using Chrome with Bola for the best experience

2. Click on Add to Chrome

3. Then, click Add extension to allow the extension to read/write data:

4. You will then be prompted to input a license key. Copy your license key given to you in your Bola Welcome Email and paste it into the license key field

5. Click Register to register your license key

Note:

A license key is your unique license for using Bola as part of your monthly or annual subscription.

Can't find your license key?
No problem, we've got you covered. Contact your CSM or Support for assistance.

6. Lastly, don't forget to pin the extension so you don't lose track of it. Click on the extension icon and click the pin icon and then click Dismiss

3. Review training resources on voice commands

In order to become a charting expert with Bola, you will first need to know the different voice commands.

1. Select a patient and navigate to their perio chart

2. Start a new exam

3. Then click on the Learn more link of the getting started note:

Clicking this button should automatically open the Voice Command Cheat Sheet but you can also access it here.

Pro tip:

You may also notice "Help" voice commands in the Quick Voice Commands note. Try saying one of them (such as "Help Bleeding" or "Help Furcation) to see commands for those measurement types auto-magically!

4. Practice charting with Bola

Before we start charting, let's quickly double check your mic to make sure you're ready to go:

1. Click on the settings button in the mic widget (with the gear icon):

2. Then, click on Mic Settings

3. Verify that the mic you are wanting to use is actively selected in the dropdown

Using an external microphone

We highly recommend not using your built-in microphone because this type of mic will pick up too much background noise potentially causing issues with charting.

Now that your mic is selected, we are ready to start charting!

4. Click Back (<) and then X (close) in the top right of the window to close the settings window

5. From the patient's new perio chart, click the mic icon and wait for an audible ding (which indicates you are ready to start speaking)

6. Then, click where you would like to begin charting in your perio chart

7. Start saying measurements for pocket depths (such as "2,1,1")

Congratulations! You've started charting with Voice AI in Bola! Familiarize yourself with the other voice commands to add gingival margins, bleeding, suppuration, furcation, mobility, and more.
