Food

Learn how to manage your gym's food library, create and edit custom foods, set up portion sizes, translate food names, and integrate ingredients into recipes.

Written by Kevin Wagner

The Food views hold your gym's food library. A food is one ingredient or product, for example "Chicken breast" or "Skyr, Arla", with its nutrition values per 100 g.

You use foods as the ingredients of recipes. The Dashboard calculates the nutrition of a recipe from the foods in it and their amounts. Members can also log meals against the same library.

Find the food list

In the Dashboard menu, open Nutrition, then Foods. Nutrition also holds Nutrition plans, Nutrition templates and Recipes. The "New food" button is in the top right of the page.

Filters

The card above the table has four filters. If you change a filter, the table goes back to the first page.

The structure of a food

The food form has two columns, the left column holds the cards that you fill in and the right column holds a live summary and the language.

Left column

The extra nutrients stay hidden until you click "Add saturated fat, fiber, sugar, and sodium". If a food already has one of these values, they show at once.

Right column

The summary card shows the kcal per 100 g in large type, and the grams of protein, carbs and fat. Under each macro, it shows the share of the energy from that macro.

A colored bar shows the same split. The card updates while you type.

The summary counts 4 kcal per gram of protein and carbs, and 9 kcal per gram of fat. These shares come from the macros, not from the kcal field. If the kcal field and the macros do not agree, look again at the label on the package.

Portion weight

Above 0 g and at most 2000 g

Portion name

At most 128 characters. Each portion of a food needs its own name.

All nutrition values are per 100 g of the food. Copy them from the nutrition label on the package.

Create a food

Before you create a food, search the food list for it. A System food can already exist, and you can use it in a recipe without changes.

  1. Open Nutrition, then Foods.

  2. Click "New food".

  3. In Food details, type the Name, for example "Chicken breast". Coaches find the food by this name.

  4. If the food is a branded product, type the Brand, for example "Arla".

  5. Pick a Category, for example Poultry. The category helps to sort and filter foods.

  6. In the Language card on the right, pick the language that the name is written in.

  7. In "Nutrition per 100 g", type the kcal, protein, carbs and fat from the package label.

  8. If the label shows saturated fat, fiber, sugar or sodium, click "Add saturated fat, fiber, sugar, and sodium" and type these values.

  9. If coaches measure the food in household units, add portions. The next part tells you how.

  10. In "Allergens & dietary", select every allergen in the food and every diet that it fits.

  11. If members use other languages, fill in the Translations card. A section below tells you how.

  12. Look at the summary card. Make sure that the kcal and the energy split agree with the label.

  13. Click Create.

The Dashboard shows "Create success!" and opens the food list. The new food has the source Chain.

Add portions

A portion is a household measure with a fixed weight, for example "1 scoop" of 30 g or "1 slice" of 25 g. In a recipe, a coach can pick a portion instead of typing grams.

  1. In the Portions card, click "Add portion".

  2. In Portion, type the name of one unit, for example "1 scoop".

  3. In Grams, type the weight of one unit, for example 30.

  4. Repeat for each measure.

To remove a portion, click the trash bin next to it. Two portions of the same food cannot have the same name.

Edit, translate and delete a food

Edit a food

  1. In the food list, find the food.

  2. Click the pen at the end of the row.

  3. Change the fields.

  4. Click "Save Changes" in the summary card.

The Dashboard shows "Update success!" and opens the food list.

You can edit only foods with the source Chain. If you open a System, Member or External food, the page shows "This food is read-only". You can use such a food in recipes, but you cannot change it. If a System food has wrong values, create a Chain food with the correct values and use it instead.

Translate a food

The base name is the name in the language of the Language card. Translations let members who use another language see the name in their language.

  1. Open the food for edit, or start a new food.

  2. In the Translations card, click the tab of a language. The base language has no tab.

  3. Type the Name and, if the food has one, the Brand in that language.

  4. If the food has portions, type the name of each portion in that language.

  5. Repeat for each language that your members use.

  6. Save the food.

Supported languages are English, Danish, German, Spanish, Finnish, Faroese, French, Norwegian, Dutch and Swedish. If a translation field is empty, the base text shows. The food list and the recipe search find a food by its base name and by its translated names.

If you change the base language to the language of the open tab, the card opens another tab.

Delete and restore a food

Delete archives the food (hides it from the food search). The food is not removed from the database.

  1. In the food list, click the trash bin at the end of the row.

  2. In the "Delete food" dialog, click Delete.

An archived food does not show in the ingredient search of the recipe form. To find it again, turn on "Show archived" in the food list. Archived rows are pale and have an "Archived" label. To restore a food, click the Restore button in its row.

You can delete and restore only Chain foods.

Assign a food to a recipe

A food goes into a recipe as an ingredient. Each ingredient row in the recipe form holds one food and its weight in grams. You make two choices for each row: which food, and how you give the amount.

Amount

Add an amount label

You want a kitchen measure to show next to the grams

Add an ingredient row

  1. Open Nutrition, then Recipes, and open or create a recipe.

  2. In the Ingredients card, click "Add ingredient".

  3. A new row shows with a Food field at the top and the amount fields below.

Way 1: pick an existing food

  1. Click the Food field and type a part of the name.

  2. Pick the food in the list.

The search shows your Chain foods first, then the System foods. It finds foods by the base name and by translated names in your Dashboard language. It does not show archived foods.

Way 2: create a new food from the recipe

Use this way if the food is not in the library. You stay in the recipe, and your unsaved recipe changes stay in the form.

  1. In the Food field, type the name of the food.

  2. Click "Add new food" at the bottom of the list. You can also click the plus button next to the Food field.

  3. The "Create a new food" dialog opens. The Name starts with the text that you typed.

  4. Fill in the details, the nutrition, the portions and the allergens.

  5. Click Create.

The dialog closes, and the new food is in the row. The other rows of the recipe can also find it in their search. The dialog has no Translations card. To add translations, open the food later from the food list.

Amount option A: type the grams

Type the weight of the food in the recipe in Grams, for example 150. The grams must be above 0. The nutrition totals come from this value.

Amount option B: pick a portion

If the food has portions, the row also shows a Portion field and a Quantity field.

  1. In Portion, pick a measure, for example "1 scoop (30 g)".

  2. In Quantity, type the number of portions, for example 2.

The row fills in Grams (here 60) and the Amount label (here "2 × 1 scoop"). The recipe saves the grams, not the portion. If you change the portion of the food later, the recipe keeps its grams. To go back to grams only, pick "Grams only".

Amount option C: add an amount label

The Amount label is free text, for example "1 cup". It shows a kitchen measure to the member. It does not change the nutrition totals.

Order and remove

The order of the rows is the order of the ingredients in the recipe. Use the up and down arrows to move a row. Use the red trash bin to remove a row.

What the recipe gets from its foods

When you save the recipe, the server calculates these values from the foods and the grams:

Value

How the server finds it

Nutrition totals

For each row: the food value per 100 g × grams / 100. Then the sum of all rows.

Per serving

The totals divided by the Servings of the recipe

Allergens

Every allergen of every food in the recipe

Dietary styles

Only the styles that all foods in the recipe have

For example, a recipe with one Vegan food and one Vegetarian food is not Vegan. A recipe with milk in one food has the Dairy allergen.

The nutrition and the derived allergens show only after you save the recipe the first time. If the derived allergens or diets are wrong, turn on "Override allergens" or "Override dietary styles" and pick the values by hand. The manual values replace the derived values when you save.

If you change a food, the saved totals of the recipes that use it do not change at once. The server calculates the totals again when you save the recipe. After you correct a food, open each recipe that uses it and save it again.

Foods in sample meals

A food can also go into a nutrition template without a recipe. A sample meal row has a "Meal source" switch: Recipe or Food. If you pick Food, you search your foods and pick one, for example "Banana". Each sample meal holds a recipe or a food, never both. If you change the switch, the row clears its pick.

Tips and common problems

Good practice

  • Search before you create. A duplicate food makes the search harder for every coach in your chain.

  • Type all values per 100 g, also for a product that the package lists per portion. If the label shows only per portion, divide by the portion weight and multiply by 100.

  • Type 0 for a main nutrient that the food does not have. The four main values are required.

  • Tag the allergens on every food. The allergens of a recipe come only from its foods.

  • Tag a dietary style only if the food fits it. One food without the Vegan tag removes Vegan from the whole recipe.

  • Add portions for foods that people measure in units, for example eggs, scoops of protein powder or slices of bread.

  • Use the summary card as a check. If the energy split looks wrong, a macro value is often in the wrong field.
