422 Error: Bundles Cannot Include Subscriptions

Updated over a week ago

Bundles thrive on simplicity, offering customers curated product combinations at attractive prices. However, certain purchase options, such as subscriptions, pre-orders, or try-before-you-buy (TBYB) programs, introduce layers of complexity that bundles may struggle to accommodate.

Subscriptions involve recurring payments and automated deliveries, which may clash with the one-time purchase model of bundles. Because of this, subscriptions and similar purchase options are not supported with Zenbox.

When a subscription step is included in a bundle, Shopify rejects the checkout request and returns a 422 Unprocessable Entity error.

Common causes

  • Subscription step added to the bundle

The bundle includes a subscription or recurring payment option that Shopify cannot process alongside a one-time purchase.

  • Other unsupported recurring options

Pre-orders, TBYB, or similar recurring programs may also cause the same error, as they rely on a different purchase flow that is incompatible with bundles.

How to fix

  • Edit the bundle.

  • Remove the Subscription step or any unsupported recurring option.

  • Save and refresh the bundle.

  • Test the checkout flow again.
