I can't assign someone as a line manager
If you're wondering why you can't assign someone as a line manager, this may be because you don't have the permissions to do so.
In order to assign a line manager you will need to be an Admin user or to have both HR user and finance user permissions combined. This is known as a 'super user'. Finance permissions are available on the Regular plan or above, on Starter and Micro plans it will only be the Admin user who is able to action this without the need to change any permissions.
To change the settings the Admin or Super user (HR & Finance permissions combined) is required to navigate to Configure > settings > permissions and approvals > change what line managers can see and do in these settings ensure that Remuneration is deactivated, this will then allow the HR user to assign a line manager as both permissions now have no financial access. HR users permissions are available on the Starter plans or above.
Either the admin user or another super user will be able to assign finance permissions to you.
Who is my admin user?
If you're not sure who your admin user is, it's easy to find out if you're a HR user.
Simply navigate to the People list by clicking on People > our people. You'll then see a column titled 'status and permissions'.
The admin user will have the letter A in this column, as shown below:
The person I'm trying to assign isn't appearing in the drop-down box
In this case, double check that they've been given line manager permissions first. You can do this by heading to their profile > more > permissions > edit.
For more information on user permissions, here's a handy guide:
