The Custom Prompt tab in Build with AI gives you a blank canvas: describe the program you want in your own words, and the AI builds it for you. Powered by the latest AI engine (Opus 4.6), it pulls exercises directly from your organization's exercise library so every generated workout uses movements your athletes already know.

For an overview of Build with AI and when to use each mode review this article: Generate Training Programs with AI

Before you start

Make sure you have a program open in the builder. Build with AI creates a new phase within a new or existing program.

Step-by-step instructions

Open Build with AI and select Custom Prompt

  1. Navigate to Training Library > Programs and open your program.

  2. Click Add Phase at the top of the phase list.

  3. Select Build with AI from the dropdown.

  4. Click the Custom Prompt tab at the top of the modal.

Write your prompt

  • Type your program description into the text area under "Describe training goal, level, methodology and restrictions." You have up to 5,000 characters. The character counter in the bottom-right of the text area updates as you type.

  • Include as much relevant detail as you can. Good prompts typically cover the training goal or focus, the athlete's level and background, your preferred methodology or split, and any restrictions or constraints.

Example prompt: "Create an intermediate functional power program focused on building explosive strength for everyday movement. Use a progressive overload methodology with compound lifts as the foundation, supplemented by plyometric and kettlebell work. Structure sessions as an upper/lower/full-body split. Include a dynamic warm-up and cooldown in each session. Avoid heavy Olympic lifts like the full clean and snatch."

Bridge Tip: Click any entry in the Recently Used section to auto-fill the text area with a previous prompt, then tweak it for your current needs.

Set your program settings

These are specific settings so they don't need to be included in the text box prompt so you can save the word count for describing your phase

  1. Select the Number of Weeks:

  2. Select the Number of Days per Week

  3. Select the Workout Duration (min)

Select your equipment

  1. Scroll down to the Equipment Access section.

  2. Select an equipment preset to set a baseline: Bodyweight, Commercial Gym, Performance Gym, Full Gym, or Custom.

  3. Fine tune the equipment: Manually select or deselect any specific equipment

Generate your program

  1. Click Generate. The button is only active once the prompt textarea contains text.

  2. The modal shows a loading screen while the AI builds your program. Wait for it to complete.

  3. Once generation finishes, the new phase appears in your program's phase list. Click Open in Builder to view the full workout structure.

The generated phase is fully editable. You can adjust exercises, sets, reps, blocks, and scheduling just like any manually built phase.

Tips for writing effective prompts

  • Include the "who." Mentioning the athlete's age, training history, and goals helps the Build with AI select appropriate exercises and intensity. "Intermediate lifter, late 30s, 2 years of consistent training" gives the tool much more to work with than "intermediate."

  • Name your methodology. If you have a preference, state it. "Upper/lower split with progressive overload" or "push/pull/legs rotation" tells Build with AI exactly how to structure the days.

  • State exclusions clearly. If an athlete can't do certain movements, be explicit: "Avoid all squat and deadlift variations" is clearer than "bad knees."

  • Add context, not just constraints. Beyond what to avoid, describe what to emphasize: "Prioritize posterior chain development" or "Include extra core stability work" gives it a positive direction.

  • Use the full character limit when it helps. You don't need to fill all 5,000 characters, but don't hold back on relevant detail. A two-sentence prompt will work, but a more detailed one will produce a more tailored result.
