Double opt-in is a two-step subscription process. When someone submits their email through your lead acquisition widget, your sign-up form, or your fast checkout, the system creates a pending subscription and sends them a confirmation email. They are only added to your marketing list once they click the confirmation link.
This matters for legal compliance — in Germany in particular, you need provable consent for every marketing email recipient. Double opt-in records the email, IP address, and timestamp for both the initial request and the confirmation click, so you can demonstrate consent if challenged.
How to activate it
Go to Settings > Personalization > Marketing in your Back Office and switch on Enable double opt-in for marketing emails.
From this point on, new members signing up via your lead acquisition widget, sign-up form, or fast checkout go through the double opt-in flow.
Before going live, we recommend two additional steps:
Review the confirmation email template. Go to Settings > Transactional Notifications > Client Sign Up and open the "Member double opt-in confirmation" template. The email comes with a default version. You can edit the wording, but it must stay neutral — no promotional content, no offers, no images of products. This is a legal requirement.
Update your widget subtitle. Go to Settings > Widgets, open your lead acquisition widget, and update the subtitle to make it clear that submitting is the first step. Suggested wording: "By submitting this form, you request to receive marketing communications. Your subscription will only be activated after email confirmation."
How it works
When a member submits their email, the system creates a pending subscription and sends them a confirmation email with a single button: Confirm my subscription.
Until they click that button, they are not added to your marketing list and won't receive any campaigns. When they click, they are redirected to your studio website (if you've configured one), the consent is logged, and they start receiving campaigns according to your normal email and segment settings.
Where to check a member's consent status
Open the member's profile in your Back Office. The bell icon at the bottom shows their marketing consent status. This is the same indicator shown in How do smartlists work.
Important notes
Existing members are not affected. Double opt-in applies only to members signing up after you activate the feature.
The confirmation link does not expire. A member can still confirm later.
The confirmation email is sent once. If a member doesn't receive it (spam folder, typo, etc.), they can always log in to their member profile and accept marketing emails from there.
Available on request outside Germany. German studios see the toggle by default. If you're in another market and want it enabled, contact your account manager.
