To help you to prepare for your first Petcare booking, we've put together some questions to ask that will help you to take great care of your new furry friend and establish a trusting relationship with pet parents.
Behavioural
- What do they like and dislike?
- Do they feel anxious if they're left alone or encounter new people or animals?
- Do they have a history of bites or mood swings?
- How does the pet act around children, other animals or loud noises?Routines and feeding
- What kind of foods do they eat, at what times, and how much?- Where is the food kept?
- Does the pet have a treat limit, and are they motivated by treats?
How does the pet act when out and about?
- Ask for permission before letting a pet off-lead in public spaces or in the garden.- Do they exercise off-lead?
- Where in the local area does the pet usually go for walks?
- Does the pet walk or travel with a muzzle?
Health
- Is the pet up to date with their vaccines and medication, and do they require any medication or treatment to be administered during the sit? You can ask for a demonstration if so.
- If a female dog is on heat, the pet parent should let you know as they may require a closer eye.
Communicating with a pet
What commands does the pet know and what gestures do they recognise? Try a dog’s recall at home with you before you try out in public. If they can do any tricks, trying these with the pet in exchange for a treat can help to build rapport.
Helping a pet to feel comfortable
- Does the pet have its own favourite bed, crate, basket or toys?- Do they require their own space or feel territorial? If they do, it would be good for the pet parent to bring it along to any boarding bookings to reduce separation anxiety and give them a sense of familiarity.
