Landlords insure the structure you live in, but not your personal possessions. That’s why Renters need insurance too. A CalCas renters policy will cover your belongings, additional living expenses if you’re displaced, and personal liability for injuries or damage sustained by others.
Renters insurance comparable to homeowners insurance, but without the premiums associated with insuring the physical structure.
Coverage C (Personal Property)
Provides coverage for your furnishings and other non-excluded items if they are damaged due to named perils. Renters are able to choose their personal property coverage amount – a quick inventory of your belongings is recommended so that selected coverage limits meet replacement compensation needs. High-value possessions may require a floater.
“Named perils” simply means there is a list of instances when the policy will pay for the loss. If the cause is not “named” on the policy, then there is no coverage for that cause of loss.
“Exclusions,” which may include articles insured elsewhere, animals, property of roommates, and vehicles.
Expensive items, such as jewelry, should be protected by purchasing a Scheduled Personal Property endorsement, often called a “floater.”
Coverage D (Loss of Use)
This coverage pays additional living expenses – over and above your normal household living expenses – when your home is uninhabitable due to a covered loss. An example of covered expenses would be hotel, pet housing and moving costs.
Coverage E (Liability Coverage)
Personal Liability Covers legal expenses and award amounts when you or your family members (as described in your policy) are determined to be legally liable for bodily injury and/or property damage sustained by others. Children and pets are commonly good reasons for increasing this coverage.
Coverage F (Medical Payments to Others)
Coverage F Pays the medical bills of people not of your household who are accidentally injured while on your property or by you or a household member, whether on your property or elsewhere.
