Create Learning Modules in CampusESP

Learn how to create learning modules, add content and quizzes, and deliver guided experiences for students, families, or both.

CampusESP Learning Modules help you organize important information into a structured experience that participants can complete at their own pace. Institutions use Learning Modules for a variety of purposes, including student onboarding, compliance training, orientation, family engagement, Family Weekend preparation, and resource education. In this article, you'll learn how to create a module, add units and content, build quizzes, and prepare your module for launch.


Before you start

To follow these steps, you'll need access to the Orientation area in your CampusESP admin portal and permission to create Learning Modules.

NOTE: Your CampusESP team will work with you to confirm enrollment and audience settings before you launch.


Create a new learning module

  1. Navigate to Orientation.

  2. Select Learning Modules.

  3. Click Add Module.

  4. Enter a title for your module.

  5. Add a description that explains:

    1. What participants will learn or complete

    2. Why the information is important

    3. Any expectations or completion requirements

  6. Upload a header image. We recommend an image size of 1200x400 pixels.

  7. In When complete, join communities, select a community participants should join after finishing the module.

  8. Choose the audience that should have access to the module.

  9. Click Create Module.

Examples for modules may include:

Student-focused learning modules

  • New Student Orientation

  • Alcohol Awareness

  • Student Code of Conduct

  • Title IX Training

  • Campus Resources and Support

Family-focused learning modules

  • Family Orientation

  • Supporting Your Student's Success

  • Understanding Financial Aid and Billing

  • New Family Welcome Series

Example module description

"Welcome to Family Orientation. This module will help you learn about campus resources, important dates, and ways to support your student's transition to college. Complete each unit to prepare for a successful first semester."

Use completion communities

Completion communities allow you to automatically group users who finish a module.

You can use these communities to:

  • Send follow-up communications

  • Share additional resources

  • Promote upcoming events

  • Track completion

Examples include:

  • Orientation Completed

  • Family Orientation Completed

  • Family Weekend Attendees

  • Student Success Program Participants

Choose who can see the module

Use the audience targeting settings to determine who can access the module.

Examples include:

Student audiences

  • First-year students

  • Transfer students

  • Graduate students

  • Students living on campus

  • Students living off campus

Family audiences

  • Parents and family members of first-year students

  • Parents and family members of transfer students

  • Family Orientation attendees

  • Family Weekend attendees

Add units to your module

Units are the individual courses or topics within a module.

To create a unit:

  1. Open your module.

  2. Click Add Unit.

  3. Enter a title.

  4. (Optional) Add an estimated completion time.

  5. Add a description.

  6. Select the audience for the unit.

  7. Click Create Unit.

Add content to a unit

Each unit can contain multiple content sections.

  1. Open the unit.

  2. Click Add Content.

  3. Choose the content type you want to add.

Video content

Videos are useful for welcome messages, presentations, and educational content.

Examples include:

  • Welcome from the Dean of Students

  • Orientation Overview

  • Family Weekend Welcome

  • Campus Safety Introduction

Add a brief description to explain what participants should learn from the video.

Text content

Text sections work well for:

  • Policies and procedures

  • Important deadlines

  • Checklists

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Resource information

Use short paragraphs and headings to make content easier to read.

Images

Images can help illustrate information such as:

  • Campus maps

  • Event schedules

  • Process diagrams

  • Resource guides

Add a quiz to check understanding

Quizzes can help reinforce key concepts and confirm understanding.

Examples include:

Student quiz topics

  • Code of Conduct

  • Title IX requirements

  • Campus policies

  • Academic expectations

Family quiz topics

  • FERPA basics

  • Billing deadlines

  • Campus resources

  • Family Weekend logistics

To add a quiz:

  1. Open the unit.

  2. Click Add Quiz.

  3. Enter a question.

  4. Add answer choices.

  5. Select the correct answer.

  6. Save the question.

Repeat these steps to add additional questions.

NOTE: Always double-check that the correct answer is selected before saving your quiz. This ensures reporting and completion data are accurate.

Review your module

Before launch, confirm that:

  • Module titles and descriptions are accurate

  • Unit content is complete

  • Videos and images display correctly

  • Quiz answers are configured properly

  • Audience targeting is correct

  • Completion communities are assigned as intended

Launch your learning module

Once your module is complete:

  1. Review all settings and content.

  2. Confirm audience targeting.

  3. Connect with your CampusESP team to review your configuration and enrollment strategy.
