Why Can’t I Change the Email During a Blackout Period?

Updated this week

If your payment is in a blackout period, certain fields — including the Interac email address — cannot be edited.

What Is a Blackout Period?

A blackout period occurs when:

  • A payment is currently processing

  • A charge attempt has been initiated

  • The payment is within the 4-business-day processing window

During this time, key payment details are locked.

Why Are Fields Locked?

To prevent mid-processing delivery failures.

Changing payment details while funds are moving through the banking network can cause:

  • Failed transfers

  • Misapplied payments

  • Rejected transactions

To protect your payment, edits are temporarily restricted.

What Should I Do?

You must wait until:

  • The payment fully completes
    or

  • The payment exits processing status

Once processing is complete, you can:

  • Update the Interac e-Transfer email

  • Edit the payee details

If you need to make urgent changes, wait for the current payment to finish before updating details to avoid disruption.
