What You’ll Learn

Sometimes students can't submit assignments in Google Classroom due to permission settings. This quick tutorial shows three things you can try to fix it. While none of them is guaranteed to work every time, they often resolve the issue.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to:

  • Confirm submissions are allowed for students

  • Remove or adjust due dates

  • Disable automatic closing of submissions after the due date

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Go to the Class

    • Open the class where the assignment was created.

  2. Navigate to Classwork

    • Click on the “Classwork” tab at the top.

  3. View Assignment Settings

    • Click on the specific assignment you’re troubleshooting.

    • Then click “View Instructions.”

  4. Check Submission Settings

    • Make sure “Accepting submissions” is turned on.

  5. Edit the Assignment

    • Click “Edit” on the assignment.

  6. Adjust the Due Date

    • If a due date is set, try removing it by clearing the date field. This can sometimes reopen submissions.

  7. Check the “Close Submissions” Box

    • If a due date is present, a checkbox labeled “Close submissions after due date” will appear.

    • Uncheck this box to allow submissions even after the deadline.

  8. Save Your Changes

    • After adjusting settings, make sure to save the assignment.

Things to Note

These fixes aren’t guaranteed, but trying all three steps—ensuring submissions are allowed, removing the due date, and unchecking the close submissions box—often solves the issue.
