CoGrader does not accept video files (MP4, MOV, and similar) as submissions. What works, and works well, is grading the transcript of the video. You upload the spoken content as text, and CoGrader grades it against your rubric like any other written response.
What grades well, and what does not
Transcript grading is a strong fit when the thing you are assessing is what the student says:
Oral exams and viva answers
Spoken explanations of a concept
Presentations and pitches
A coach or teacher talking through a drill, session plan, or skill breakdown
It is not a fit when the thing you are assessing is a physical performance that the words alone do not capture, for example demonstrating the mechanics of a sports skill on camera. In those cases the transcript will miss most of what you are marking, so keep those on manual review.
How to grade a video submission
Get a transcript of the video. Use whatever is easiest for your setup:
Your LMS captions (Moodle and most platforms can auto-caption uploaded media)
YouTube or Vimeo auto-generated captions, exported as text
A transcription tool such as Otter, Whisper, or Google Docs voice typing
Clean it up if needed. A quick pass to fix obvious errors improves grading accuracy, but it does not need to be perfect.
Open the assignment in CoGrader and select the rubric you want to grade against.
Add the transcript as the student response. Paste it in directly, or upload it as a text, DOCX, or PDF file in place of an essay.
Grade as usual. Review the AI feedback and scores, adjust anything you want, then approve and send.
Tips
Name each transcript file with the student's name so submissions stay organized.
Make sure your rubric criteria can actually be judged from spoken content. If a criterion depends on something only visible on screen, mark that part manually.
Better transcript quality means better feedback, so favor sources that handle your accents and terminology well.
Native video grading
Grading video directly, without a transcript, is on our roadmap but is not available today. If it is a hard requirement for your programs, contact us via the in-app chat or at support@cograder.com, and we can discuss options.
