Yamaha SCP/RCP and the Automator

Learn how to use Yamaha digital audio consoles with the Cuez Automator

What is Yamaha SCP/RCP?

SCP (Smart Control Protocol) and RCP (Remote Control Protocol) are Yamaha's network control protocols for their professional digital audio consoles, including the QL, CL, and PM series. They allow external systems to control the console over a network — opening and closing faders, setting fader levels, and more. More information on their website.

Adding a Yamaha SCP/RCP 'device' to the Automator

In the top right corner of the Automator, we see 'Devices' - this can be either in red or green depending on the status of the configured devices. Click it and select 'Add device'.

Next, select 'Yamaha SCP/RCP' from the 'Device type' dropdown list, then give it a name.

Once the device is selected and given a name, we will see all fields needed to configure it so it can be used with the Automator.

Basic device configuration

You can enable or disable the Yamaha SCP/RCP, and you can enter the 'Host' (the IP address of the console) as well as the 'Port'. Once these settings have been entered, the device should show as 'online' (green) in the top right corner.

The host and port are configured in the network settings of the Yamaha console itself. The default port is 49280 for SCP or 49281 for RCP — the Cuez Automator will enter the default value automatically, but you can change these settings as needed, depending on your exact configuration.

Configuring actions

The next step is then to configure each Item and Block configuration with the (set of) functions you want to perform on the Yamaha console when triggering the Item or Block - more general information on that in this article.

Available functions

Open fader

The 'Open fader' function opens a specified fader on the Yamaha console. Configure this function with the following arguments:

  • Fader — the fader to open.

  • Channel — the channel index to apply the action to (note: channel indexing starts at 1 from Automator version 1.19.0 onwards).

Close fader

The 'Close fader' function closes a specified fader on the Yamaha console. Configure this function with the following arguments:

  • Fader — the fader to close.

  • Channel — the channel index to apply the action to.

Set fader

The 'Set fader' function sets a specified fader to a defined level on the Yamaha console. Configure this function with the following arguments:

  • Fader — the fader to adjust.

  • Channel — the channel index to apply the action to.

  • Level — the desired fader level value.

Note for users upgrading from an older Automator version: From Automator version 1.19.0 onwards, channel index numbering starts at 1 (previously it started at 0). If you configured Yamaha functions on an earlier version of the Automator, check your channel index values after upgrading and update them as needed.
