Follow these simple steps to get your first upsell live and shown to your customers.

The text below includes all details and field descriptions, but you can also watch a super quick 1-minute video tutorial showing the upsell setup and in action.

➡️ Step 1 – Start configuring your first upsell

Once the app is installed, the first page you will see is the Dashboard, offering two options:

  1. Set up manually - Allows you to fully customize your upsells. We will take a closer look at this option in the following steps of this guide.

  2. Activate upsell - Allows you to activate AI-powered upsell in one click. This highly effective feature recommends relevant products to your customers after they hit the Add to Cart button.

➡️ Step 2 – Select the offer placement

Starting from the very top, decide what kind of page should trigger the upsell offer and how you prefer to display it. Currently, you can choose from these five options (stay tuned for more!):

💡 More information on placements in Candy Rack can be found in the article titled Learn more about placements in Candy Rack.

➡️ Step 3 – Select product targets

You can target specific collections or products with upsell offers. By default, All Products are selected. With the use of Additional conditions, it is possible to have flexibility when choosing the target products. Detailed information about this feature can be found in the article about Advanced Targeting.

➡️ Step 4 – Select your upsell products

Candy Rack allows you to choose from four different upsell types:

AI mode

Products are selected automatically using Shopify’s Product Recommendations API. Learn more.

Manual mode

Enables manual selection of products for personalized upsells and promotions. You can select up to 10 upsell products per offer. If you need more, simply create another offer, and the upsell products related to multiple offers will stack.

Same product

Offer the same product(s) that your customer has just added to the cart.

Custom service

Offer custom services like gift packaging and extended warranty, or create your own service.

❗️Please note: The service fulfillment of all service upsells is up to you as the seller. Once selected, the service upsell will automatically be created as a regular product in your catalog.

➡️ Step 5 – Other settings

Last but not least, you can customize your upsell offers further with a set of different features.

Discounts

If you want to make the offer even more irresistible, an upsell discount is a great way to do it. Just enter the discount value (percentage or absolute value) and Candy Rack will generate a discount code that will be applicable to the upsell.

❗️If you want to use your own custom discount code, make sure it exists or create it in Discounts in Shopify first.

Additional settings

Upsell position

Control the offer position on the pop-up in case of multiple upsell offers. The one with the lowest number will be displayed at the top, the second lowest number will follow, etc.

True upsell (upgrade): Remove parent product when upsell product is added

Option to offer customers an upgrade to a better version of the product (e.g., upgrading from iPhone 14 to iPhone 14 Pro).

Remove upsell product when parent product is removed

This can help in cases when you don't want to allow customers to buy the upsell product(s) without the targeted product(s).

Don't display if any of the offered product is already in the cart

Prevents the upsell offer from being visible if any of the upsell products are already added.

Display custom note field

Enable the text field to allow your customers to enter personalization details/messages.

Match parent product's quantity

Offer the same number of upsell products as the number of targeted products.

Enable quantity selector

This will allow customers to add multiple items of the upsell product(s) to the cart

➡️ Step 6 – Save and activate the offer

Now just click on the Save button at the bottom right part of the page. And that's it, your upsell offer is now live. Congratulations!

➡️ Step 7 – Test the upsell offer in your store

As the last step, we recommend going to your store and testing if the app works as expected.

For example, if you have selected the pop-up with the offer to be triggered on the Add to cart button click, simply go to any product page based on your targeting settings, wait until a page is fully loaded, and click on the Add to Cart button.

Based on the number of upsell offers, your pop-up should look like this:

If you have opted for the placement of the offer on the Thank You page, first complete the order (including payment). Once finished, the pop-up will show on the page confirming the order, and should look like this:

➡️ Troubleshooting – What to do if your pop-up doesn't work

If you don't see your pop-up, please follow these steps:

  1. Ensure the offer is active
Go to the Dashboard. Find your offer in the Upsells Overview list and make sure the status is set to active. If it's inactive, simply change the status to active.

  2. Check the offer placement
Verify the placement of the offers you have selected (pre-purchase or post-purchase) to ensure you expect the offers to show at the right place. The placement of each offer can be found on the Dashboard.

  3. Verify targeting settings
Go to the configuration of your offer by clicking on it in the Upsells Overview. Scroll down to the Displays for section and make sure it's set up correctly. To trigger the offer for all products, select All Products or leave the targeting empty.

  4. Test the pop-up
For pre-purchase upsells, go to any product page and click on the Add to Cart button. You should see a pop-up window including your offer.
For post-purchase offers, complete the order first, and then on the Thank You page, the pop-up should appear. Note that in some specific cases, the post-purchase pop-up cannot be displayed to customers due to Shopify's limitations regarding order editing. More information about this topic can be found in this article.

  5. Contact support
If you still don’t see it, please get in touch with our support team using the in-app chat, and we will be happy to take a look and help you.

💡 Important note: Please make sure the page is fully loaded before clicking on the Add to Cart button. The Candy Rack script is loaded asynchronously, so it doesn’t prevent other elements on the page from being loaded first.

➡️ Additional Actions

  • Multiple upsell offers targeting the same products and placements will stack. You can combine both product and service offers.

  • Go to the Customization section and customize (or localize) the pop-up texts and colors, or even add a custom CSS code. Learn more about customizing the visual style of your pop-up.

  • Read our article 7 Proven Upsell Strategies & Tactics on Shopify in 2022 to understand the upselling game better.

Happy upselling!
