What is TC40?

Use this article to understand what a TC40 report is, why it matters for your Visa fraud ratio, and how Disputifier's TC40 data feed helps you stop fraudulent orders before they turn into chargebacks.

What is a TC40 report?

A TC40 report (Transaction Code 40) is a fraud report that a card issuer (the bank that issued the customer's card) files with Visa when a cardholder says a transaction on their card was fraudulent. For example, a cardholder might see a charge they don't recognize and tell their bank their card was used without permission. The bank then files a TC40 report for that transaction.

A TC40 report is not a chargeback. It doesn't reverse any funds or require a response from you. It simply records that the transaction was reported as fraud.

💡TC40 reports only apply to Visa transactions. Mastercard uses a similar fraud reporting system called SAFE (System to Avoid Fraud Effectively).

Why do TC40 reports matter?

TC40 reports matter because Visa uses them to measure fraud on your account, even when no chargeback is filed. Fraud reported through TC40 counts toward Visa's monitoring programs, such as the Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP). A high volume of TC40 reports can put your merchant account at risk of fines, reviews, or other actions from your payment processor.

A TC40 report is often an early warning sign. Many fraud reports are followed by a chargeback on the same transaction days or weeks later.

How does the TC40 data feed help me?

The TC40 data feed gives you Visa fraud report data shortly after an issuer files it, so you can act before the fraud causes more damage. With TC40 data, you can:

  • Spot orders that were reported as fraud before a chargeback is filed

  • Stop fulfilling or shipping orders that were reported as fraud

  • Identify fraud patterns, such as repeated attacks from the same source

How do I enroll in TC40?

You can enroll in TC40 in the chargeback management portal in either of these two ways:

  • From the home page: Go to the Fraud rate section and click Activate VAMP data for $10/month/MID.

  • When you add a MID: In the MID setup form, select TC40 as one of your enrollment programs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a TC40 report the same as a chargeback?

No. A TC40 report is a fraud report filed by the card issuer, and it doesn't move any money. A chargeback is a formal dispute that reverses the charge. A TC40 report can be followed by a chargeback on the same transaction, but not always.

Can I respond to or dispute a TC40 report?

No. TC40 reports can't be disputed or removed. The best way to reduce their impact is to act quickly on the data, for example by stopping shipment and preventing repeat charges to the same customer.

Does TC40 work with Mastercard, American Express, or Discover?

No. TC40 is a Visa program and only covers Visa transactions.

How long does TC40 take to go live?

TC40 usually takes 10-15 days to go live.
