Set up Safety Tracking and add Safety Contacts

Turn Safety Tracking on or off, add friends as Safety Contacts who follow your trainings live, and remove them when you need to.

With Safety Tracking, people you choose can follow your trainings live and get an alert if you stop moving. This article is for riders: turn on Safety Tracking once, then add the friends who should follow you as Safety Contacts.

⭐ This is a Premium feature. You need Premium to use Safety Tracking, but your Safety Contacts can use a free Equilab account. See Start Premium or a free trial.

Before you start

  • Each Safety Contact needs the Equilab app and must be your friend in Equilab. See Add or remove friends.

  • Check that your phone settings are right for Equilab, and ask each Safety Contact to check theirs. If battery settings limit Equilab on your phone or theirs, Safety Tracking and its alerts might not work well. See Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.

  • Each Safety Contact needs notifications for Equilab turned on, in the app and in their phone's settings. If notifications are off, they don't get the start and stop notifications or the Safety Alarm.

  • Keep mobile data on for the whole training. Safety Tracking needs an internet connection to share your position.

Turn on Safety Tracking

  1. Go to the Track tab.

  2. Tap Safety Tracking, above the Horse button.

  3. Tap Enable Safety Tracking. If you're on the free plan, Equilab first offers you a free trial or Premium.

Safety Tracking is now on for every training until you turn it off. Next, add your Safety Contacts.

Add a Safety Contact

Add the people who should follow your trainings, for example a family member, a friend or your instructor. Turn on Safety Tracking first.

  1. Go to the Track tab and tap Safety Tracking.

  2. In the Safety Contacts section, tap Add a safety contact.

  3. Choose the person from your list of friends.

The person now shows in your Safety Contacts and stays there for every training until you remove them. To add more people, repeat the steps.

If Notifications off shows under a contact's name, that person has turned off notifications in the Equilab app and won't get alerts until they turn them back on. See My Safety Contact doesn't get alerts.

Safety Contacts work one way: they follow your trainings, not the other way around. For you to follow a friend, they add you as their Safety Contact.

What your Safety Contacts see

While you record a training with Safety Tracking on, your Safety Contacts get:

  • A notification when you start and when you stop your training.

  • Safety Tracking at the top of their Home feed, with your name. Tapping it opens your live training: your position, your phone's battery, the time since you started, distance, speed and your current gait, or that the training is finished.

  • The Safety Alarm, if you haven't moved for 5 minutes. The Safety Alarm is on once you turn on Safety Tracking. To turn the Safety Alarm off, use the Safety Alarm switch on the Safety Tracking page. See What happens when you stop moving (Safety Alarm).

Your Safety Contacts see your position only while your phone has an internet connection. If you lose signal, your full path and current status appear for them again when you're back online.

Remove a Safety Contact

  1. Go to the Track tab and tap Safety Tracking.

  2. In the Safety Contacts section, tap the three dots next to the person's name.

  3. Tap Delete.

The person is no longer your Safety Contact and stops getting notifications and alerts about your trainings.

Turn off Safety Tracking

Safety Tracking stays on for every training until you turn it off. To turn it off:

  1. Go to the Track tab and tap Safety Tracking.

  2. Tap Safety Tracking Active.

  3. Tap Disable Safety tracking.

Safety Tracking is now off. To turn it on again, follow the steps under Turn on Safety Tracking.

If the person who wants to follow you doesn't use Equilab, there's another way:

If your contact doesn't use Equilab

Someone without Equilab can't be a Safety Contact, but you can send them a Safety Tracking link before each training. They open the link in a web browser and follow your position on a live map.

People following a link don't get any alerts: no start or stop notifications and no Safety Alarm. If someone should get alerts, ask them to create a free Equilab account, become friends in Equilab and add them as a Safety Contact. See Share a live tracking link with anyone.
