Extern is not responsible for recommending any taxation withholding. Stipend recipients must determine their withholding percentages and must consult with a tax professional if they have any questions.
Once stipends are delivered, Extern will not send the difference in the stipend that was automatically taxed nor will they send another stipend with an amended tax form.
If your stipend was taxed, it is due to one of two reasons:
30% Tax: this is a tax that is automatically enforced if no form of tax identification is provided (i.e. Social Security Number, Foreign Tax Identification Number, etc.)
We cannot circumnavigate this tax; if a number is not provided, the tax will be baked into your stipend
24% Tax: this is a tax that reflects the withholding amount you selected on the tax form
