🐰What are the Differences between Different Types of Bundles As Products (BAP)?

This article introduces the three different types of Bundle as A Product(BAP) in Fast Bundle, Single BAP, Multi BAP, and Cart Transform.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When setting up a bundle in Fast Bundle, such as a Fixed bundle or a Mix and Match bundle, a product will be automatically created for that bundle. This product is known as BAP (Bundle As Product), and there are three options for how the bundle appears in the cart and order summary: Single BAP, Multi BAP, and Cart Transform. Each option offers unique functionality, allowing you to control how bundles display and are tracked in orders. Below is an overview of each option and guidance on when to use them:

  • Single-BAP: This option creates the bundle as a tangible product in the order, meaning the bundle appears as a single item in the cart and order summary.

  • Multi-BAP: Creates a virtual (dummy) product, with each item in the bundle listed individually. No combined product is shown in the cart or inventory tracking.

  • Cart Transform: Organizes individual items within the bundle in the cart and order summary, showing the BAP as a single item while displaying the bundled items during checkout. This option is useful for packing and order management, and creates a dummy product for the bundle as well.

When creating a Mix and Match bundle, if you have enabled product creation for it, you can choose to create it as a Multi BAP by default or select the newly added Cart Transform option.

In the sections below, we offer a detailed breakdown of Single BAP, Multi BAP, and Cart Transform, highlighting their features, differences, and best use cases.

1. Display in Cart

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi BAP)

The items in the bundle will be shown in the cart as individual line items. The discount is applied to each item in the bundle, and the products are separately visible in the cart, checkout, and order summary.

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single BAP)

The bundle appears as a single product in the cart and checkout.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

The bundle appears as a single item in the cart, displaying the BAP's name with the discounted price. In the checkout process, a dropdown under the BAP's name reveals all included products. This option provides a streamlined cart view while still allowing visibility of individual items during checkout.

2. Product Creation and Inventory

You can view the created product in your Shopify panel by clicking on "Edit Product on Shopify."

  • The Multi BAP

When using a Multi-BAP, the product created in Shopify is a placeholder or dummy product that will not be added to the cart or purchased. Instead, when added correctly (using Fast Bundle's widget or add-to-cart), the individual products in the bundle will be placed in the cart and included in the order. (You can read more about this here: What is Multi-BAP?)

Since the actual products are added to the cart, their inventory will be updated accordingly. However, the inventory of the Multi-BAP itself cannot be tracked.

  • The Single BAP

In contrast, Single BAP treats the bundle as a distinct Shopify product. The variants of this new product are the possible combinations of the variants in the items within the bundle. For example, if a bundle is created with a T-shirt and a Hat product, with the following variants: T-shirt sizes (Large, Medium) and Hat colors (Blue, Black, Red), the Single-BAP will have six variants:

    • Large T-Shirt + Blue Hat

    • Large T-Shirt + Black Hat

    • Large T-Shirt + Red Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Blue Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Black Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Red Hat

Variant Limitation in Single-BAP

Remember, in Fast Bundle, there is a limit of 100 variants for the variants of a Single-BAP.

For example, a Single-BAP with four products: two "Complete Snowboard" products, each with five variants, the Gift Card with four variants, and the "Collection Snowboard" with three variants.

The total number of variants for this product would be 5 × 5 × 3 × 4 = 300, which exceeds Shopify's variant limit of 100. Therefore, you won’t be able to create a Single-BAP; you will need to create a Multi-BAP instead.

When an order is placed, the inventory for the bundle product is managed. If the order is paid or authorized, the inventory levels for both the bundle product and its constituent items are updated accordingly.

For more information on inventory management, please refer to our guide, "How Does the Inventory of the BAP Work?"

  • The Bundle with Cart Transform

In this approach, the bundle appears as a single product in the cart, similar to Single BAP, displaying the bundle name and discounted price. The product type is the same as Multi BAP: the bundle is a dummy product and will appear in the cart. However, it doesn't have inventory (since it's a dummy product) and will include a drop-down at checkout to show the items included in it. The key difference is that this bundle doesn't display a discount code; it only shows the items with their prices after the discount.

3. Discount Application

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi BAP)

Discounts for Multi BAP bundles are distributed across the individual items within the bundle.

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single BAP)

The discount is incorporated into the price of the BAP as the difference between the final price and the compare-at price.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

The total discount on the bundle is distributed among the included items and appears in the order as a line item price without discount labels or tags. Each item will display a line under its name indicating "Part of bundle product," helping you identify which bundle each item belongs to.

4. Sales Channels

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi BAP)

As a dummy product, the only available sales channel for the Multi BAP is the online sales channel; other sales channels will not be available.

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single BAP)

Since the Single BAP is a product on Shopify, you can easily add it to almost all your sales channels, just like any other product. Handling the variants within the bundle should generally be seamless. Simply locate the BAP in your Shopify admin and select your desired sales channels for that Single BAP.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

Cart Transform behaves similarly to Multi BAP in terms of sales channels.
