🟢 What are the Differences between Different Types of Bundles As Products (BAP)?

This article introduces the two different ways the Bundle as A Product can be added to the cart. Single-BAP and Multi-BAP.

Updated over a month ago

When setting up a bundle as a product (BAP) in fixed bundles, you have three options for how it will appear in the cart and order summary: Single-BAP, Multi-BAP, and Cart Transform. Each option offers unique functionality, helping you control how your bundles display and track within orders. Here’s an overview of each option and guidance on when to use them:

  • Single-BAP: This option creates the bundle as a tangible product in the order, meaning the bundle appears as a single item in the cart and order summary.

  • Multi-BAP: Creates a virtual (dummy) product, with each item in the bundle listed individually, but without a combined product in the cart or inventory tracking.

  • Cart Transform: Allows you to organize individual items within each bundle in the cart and order summary, showing the BAP as a single item while displaying the bundled items in checkout, particularly useful for packing and order management.

When creating a Mix and Match bundle, if you have enabled product creation for it, you can choose to create it as a Multi-BAP by default or select the newly added Cart Transform option.

In the sections below, we provide detailed breakdowns of Single-BAP, Multi-BAP, and Cart Transform, including features, differences, and best use cases.

1. Display in Cart

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi-BAP)

When you choose this option, the items in the bundle will be shown in the cart as line items.
The discount is applied to each item in the bundle, and the products in the bundle are separately visible in the cart and it will be the same in the checkout and order.

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single-BAP)

When set to Single-BAP, the bundle appears as a single product in the cart and the checkout.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

With Cart Transform, the bundle appears as a single item in the cart, displaying the BAP's name with the discounted price. In the checkout process, a dropdown under the BAP's name reveals all included products. This provides a streamlined cart view while still allowing visibility of individual bundle items during checkout.

2. Product Creation and Inventory

You can view the created product on your Shopify panel by clicking on "Edit product on Shopify."

  • The (Multi-BAP)

When you have a Multi-BAP, the product created in Shopify is a placeholder product or a dummy product that will never be added to the cart and bought. Instead, if added correctly, (using Fast Bundle's widget / add-to-cart) the individual products in the bundle will be added to the cart and placed on the order. Since the actual products are added to the cart, the inventory of the individual items will be correctly updated. However, the inventory of the Multi-BAP itself cannot be tracked.

  • The (Single-BAP)

In contrast, Single-BAP treats the bundle as a distinct Shopify product.
The variants of this new product are the possible combinations of the variants in the items in the bundle.
So if a bundle is created of a T-shirt and a Hat product, with these variants :
T-shirt sizes (Large, Medium) and Hat colors (Blue, Black, Red), the Single-BAP will have six variants:

    • Large T-Shirt + Blue Hat

    • Large T-Shirt + Black Hat

    • Large T-Shirt + Red Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Blue Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Black Hat

    • Medium T-Shirt + Red Hat

Variant Limitation in Single-BAP

Since Shopify has a limitation on adding variants on the number of variants of a product, the number of variants of each item in the Single-BAP should not exceed Shopify's limit.

Examples of variant limitation

Example 1:

A Single-BAP with two products. The 'Collection Snowboard' has three variants, and the Gift Card has four. When a Single-BAP is created, the product on Shopify will have 12 variants.

Example 2:

A Single-BAP with four products. There are two 'Complete Snowboard' products that each have five variants. The Gift Card has four variants, and the 'Collection Snowboard' has three variants.

The total number of variants for this product would be 5×5×3×4=300, which is greater than the current variant limit on Shopify, which is 100. So, you won't be able to create a Single-BAP; you will have to create a Multi-BAP.

When an order is placed, the inventory of the bundle product is handled. If the order is paid or authorized, inventory levels for both the bundle product and its constituent items are updated accordingly.

Great news! The Single-BAP is compatible with Cash on Delivery (COD) as well. This means there's no need for the order to be paid, and it can be authorized for adjusting the inventory of items in the bundle.

  • The Bundle with Cart Transform

In this approach, the bundle appears as a single product in the cart, similar to Single-BAP, displaying the bundle name and discounted price. The type of product is the same as Multi-BAP :

The bundle is a dummy product and will show up in the cart. However, it doesn't have an inventory (because it is a dummy product) and will have a drop-down at checkout to show the items included in it. The main difference is that this bundle doesn't show a discount code it just shows the items with their prices after the discount.

3. Discount Application

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi-BAP)

Discounts for Multi-BAP bundles are distributed across the individual items within the bundle.

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single-BAP)

The discount is incorporated into the price of the ‌BAP as the difference between the final price and the compare-at price.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

The total discount on the bundle is distributed among the included items and appears in the order as a line item price without discount labels or tags. Each item will display a line under its name indicating "Part of bundle product," allowing you to recognize which bundle each item belongs to.

4. Sales Channels

  • Show the bundle as included products (Multi-BAP)

As a dummy product, the only available sales channel for the Multi BAP is the online sales channel; other sales channels will be unavailable.

https://Only available sales channel for the Multi-BAP is the Online sales channel

  • Show the bundle as a single product (Single-BAP)

Since the Single-BAP is a product on Shopify, you can easily add it to almost all your sales channels, just like any other product. Handling the variants within the bundle should generally be smooth. However, if you encounter any issues, please reach out to our support team, and we'll provide assistance promptly.

  • Show the Bundle with Cart Transform

Cart Transform behaves similarly to Multi-BAP in sales channels.
