Designing your own itinerary

FOR TRAVELERS: How to build a trip around the Experiences first — and fit everything else around them.

Most trips get planned backward: flights and hotels first, and only later a scramble to figure out what to actually do. Fernwayer is built to flip that.

As co-founder Alok Singh puts it: "Our goal is to shift how people plan their travel, and we believe the key is to plan the experiences first."

Start with the Experiences that will define your days, and let the rest of the trip take shape around them.

Start with the Experiences

Choose the places you're going, and browse the Experiences available there. As you find ones you love, save them to a Dream Board — keep several if you like, one per trip or per city, so you're gathering the moments that will anchor your days before you commit to anything.

You need fewer than you think

One Fernwayer Experience can often anchor a whole trip.

These aren't a list of sights you pass through — they ask you to give something of yourself, and they draw you in deeply. So most days, you'd just book one meaningful experience.

If an Experience is short — an hour and a half to two hours — you might do one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

The Fernwayer way isn't to fill the day. It's to go deep on the things that matter, and leave room around them.

Draw on the Lookbook

If you're not sure how it all comes together, start with the Lookbook. Like a fashion lookbook, it shows the possibilities when the right pieces are put together — real sample itineraries built from Fernwayer Experiences, from one, three, or five days in a single city to five, ten, or fifteen days across a country.

They show how to shape your days in a new place in a meaningful way. Use one of our Lookbooks, and if you are inspired, book the Experiences directly.

If you're on an iPhone or iPad — download the app and use Journeys to copy a sample Lookbook itinerary and adapt it to your own dates.

Then fit everything else around them

Once your Experiences are set, the rest of the trip falls into place around them:

  • Where you stay — choose hotels near the days that start early, or that suit the pace of your Experiences.

  • How you get around — arrange flights, trains, or a car once your route is anchored by where your Experiences are.

  • Where you eat — book restaurants around the days you have free.

You book your Experiences directly on Fernwayer; hotels, transport, and dining are yours to arrange. Fernwayer's part is the layer most trips leave to chance — the human one — and it's the part worth building everything else around.

Or let us shape it for you

For many travelers, the hardest part isn't choosing Experiences — it's seeing how it all fits together. If you'd rather not build the plan yourself, The Human Edit has a Fernwayer curator shape a complete day-by-day itinerary around your dates and preferences. More on that in Want help planning? The Human Edit.
