Add a new project

Excited about your next writing project? With First Draft Pro, starting is a breeze! You can kick off a brand new project or bring in one you’ve been working on.

Starting fresh

If you’re onto something new, here’s how you can get started:

  1. Head to your project dashboard.

  2. Select “+ New.”

  3. Click on “Start from scratch.”

  4. Follow the project wizard to set up your project:

    • Give it a title.

    • Pick a target word count.

    • Choose your genre.

    • Give it a description.

    • Set up your chapter numbering style.

    • Decide if you want a prologue.

Importing an existing draft

If you’re moving a project over, follow these steps:

  1. Get your document ready: Make sure it’s tidy and in the right format.

  2. Go to the project dashboard and hit “+ New.”

  3. Select “Quickly upload.”

  4. Follow the project wizard to set up your project:

    • Check the title, word count, description, and genre.

    • Set up your chapter numbering style.

    • Decide if you want a prologue.

Starting from a template

If you want to start your project from a template, follow these steps:

  1. Head to your project dashboard.

  2. Select “+ New.”

  3. Select from the following templates:

    • NaNoWriMo.

    • Romantasy.

    • Short Story.

  4. Follow the project wizard to set up your project:

    • Give it a title.

    • Pick a target word count.

    • Choose your genre.

    • Give it a description.

    • Set up your chapter numbering style.

    • Decide if you want a prologue.

Tweaking project details

Need to make changes? No problem! Just click on the settings cog to the right of the project title on the project card.

Worth noting: First Draft Pro has a free plan and a premium subscription plan. On the free plan, you can add a maximum of 1 project. On premium, you can add unlimited projects. 🙌
