How AI summarization for your outline works
How AI summarization for your outline works

๐Ÿฆพ Understanding what's happening behind the scenes when you use the AI summarization feature in First Draft Pro.

Updated over a week ago

AI-powered summarization is available when:

  1. You import a new project, and turn on the toggle to automatically create an outline.

  2. You are writing in the manuscript tab, and select the AI wizard hat to create or update a summary of that scene on the outline (particularly helpful for pantsers!)

AI summarization on import

If you turn on AI summarization when importing your manuscript, we'll automatically summarise every scene and create an associated scene card for this on your novel outline.

This makes it super easy for you to start writing immediately, without having to do any manual set-up of your outline.

To create each scene and chapter synopsis, we use a custom OpenAI prompt.

If there is only one scene in a chapter, the scene summary and the chapter summary will be the same. If there is more than one scene in a chapter, the chapter summary will span all scenes.

AI summarization on the outline

You can also do an ad-hoc summary of a scene as you are writing by tapping the AI summary wizard under each scene prompt on the outline.

To create each scene synopsis, we use a custom OpenAI prompt.

You can use this to generate a new summary for a scene you've just written or to generate an updated summary for a scene you've edited.
