GPS Devices

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about Fleetpin's GPS Devices.

Updated over a year ago

Q: Can I install the devices myself?

A: Yes, however if you prefer to have one of our recommended installers to assist you instead then that could also be arranged. You can either get in touch with us for recommendation or click on this link to find our list of installers. Here are installation instructions here.

Q: Will my GPS device still track my vehicle or machine outside of mobile coverage?

A: Yes it will – you may not receive a live feed of real-time data at that time, but the tracking and reports will be up-to-date once the vehicle or machine is back in mobile coverage. Our GPS devices store tracking data within when the device is out of coverage. This data is then ‘sent’ to Fleetpin once the device is back in coverage. Remember though, if your business utilises our Satellite device, this will function outside of mobile coverage areas, with the location polling intervals determined when you sign up with Fleetpin.

Q: What is the lifespan of the GPS devices?

A: Think of a GPS Device like any other piece of technology i.e. your smartphone! They can and should work reliably for quite some time, if they are installed correctly and utilised as recommend, so while we take pride in sourcing and supplying only the most accurate, reliable and future-proofed GPS devices, Fleetpin is also not immune to technology not working the way it should or for as long as it should. Therefore, we provide our customers with the same replacement warranty guarantee that our device manufacturer and supplier honours for us. To find out the warranty of your device, get in touch with Customer Support.

Q: Can I pull out my GPS device and put it into another vehicle / machine?

A: Yes you can! Let us know, and we can provide advice around the uninstall and can assist with making sure the device is functioning correctly in the new asset once installed. It’s important you notify us of any changes you make to the vehicle or machine that the device is in so we can make sure everything works and appears correctly for you in your Fleetpin account.

Q: Where will the GPS device’s data be stored and for how long?

A: Your data is securely stored on an AWS server, and we will keep the data there for seven years! At the seven year mark, we can give you the data, should you need it. You can read more about how we store and use your data to provide our service to you in our Privacy Policy.

Q: I’m selling my vehicle, what should I do with the GPS device?

A: If you are selling one of your vehicles or selling your business, you have a few options with your Fleetpin GPS devices …

  1. See if the purchaser would like to buy your second-hand devices pre-installed in the vehicles and join Fleetpin - let us know what’s happening and get the new owner to get in touch with us and we’ll take it from there.

  2. Remove the device/s, put them in your other vehicles and activate them on the Fleetpin system - get an auto-electrician to remove the device, let us know what vehicle you are taking the device out of and what vehicle you would like to put it in and we will make the switch on the system and get you up and running.

  3. Remove the device/s, deactivate them from the Fleetpin system but keep them until you have other vehicles you’d like to track - get an auto-electrician to remove the device, keep it safe. Let us know which vehicle you are deactivating so we can adjust the system and your invoice. When you want to put the device back in a vehicle just give us a call with the new vehicle details and we’ll get you up and running.

  4. Talk to us about the possibility of Fleetpin buying back your devices for our second-hand stock - give us a call on 0800 110 820 or email Customer Support support@fleetpin.co.nz (Device must be less than 12 months old and in good condition).

Q: What is the difference between the “G’s”?

A: You will often see ‘4G’ or ‘5G’ at the top corner of your mobile phone – our GPS devices have SIMs in them just like your phone, therefore require a network connection. Our devices connect to all the different telco towers; One (Vodafone), 2Degrees and Spark. We also exclusively sell 4G devices, unlike some of our competitors. Any devices below 4G will not stand the test of time. To understand more about what the different ‘G’s’ each mean and why they are important when it comes to GPS Tracking, read this useful article here.
