How to enable and use the mic in EarthRovers

Speak directly through your bot!

Updated this week

EarthRovers has a microphone feature that allows you to speak directly through your bot while driving it. This creates a more interactive experience—whether you're communicating with someone in the bot's environment or just having fun!

Using the microphone on a computer or mobile

When driving your EarthRover from a desktop, laptop, or mobile device, here’s how to enable and control the microphone feature:

1. Allow microphone access
The first time you use the mic, your device or browser may ask for permission:

  • Be sure to grant microphone access when prompted.

If access is blocked, go to your device or browser settings and enable microphone permissions for EarthRovers.

2. Locate the microphone and volume icons
On the control interface (lower-right corner of your screen), you’ll find two icons:

  • A microphone icon — tap or click this to speak through your bot.

  • A volume icon — use this to listen to the bot’s surroundings.

On desktop or laptop:

On mobile device:

TIP: Prevent Audio Feedback

If you're trying to listen to someone near the bot, turn off your microphone temporarily. This prevents feedback or echo caused by your mic picking up the bot’s speaker output.

For smooth two-way communication:

  • Turn on the mic when you want to speak.

  • Turn off the mic when you're only listening.

One person speaking at a time keeps the audio clear and avoids sound loops.
