You can create many recipes at once from a spreadsheet. This is handy when you're moving from another system and want every recipe name in Gaia before you build each one out. The file can be as simple as a list of names.
Import recipes is available to nutrition directors and other district-level pantry managers. School managers don't see this option.
Quick answer
One recipe per row. Only Recipe Name is needed.
Add a serving size and the recipe is published. It has its serving size and no ingredients yet.
A name alone creates a draft that waits on the Incomplete recipes list until you finish it.
Duplicates are skipped. A name you already have a recipe for isn't created again.
Nothing saves until you confirm.
1. Prepare your file
Use an Excel (.xlsx) or CSV (.csv) file with one recipe per row. These column headings are read:
Recipe Name (required)
Serving Size Amount and Serving Size Unit, for example 1 and cup
Yield
Process Type
Public Name, the name families see on the public menu
A file with no heading row is read as a plain list of recipe names.
2. Upload and check
Go to Pantry, click Add, then Import recipes. Click Choose file, pick your file, then click Upload & check.
3. Review the preview
The Recipe Import Preview shows one row per line in your file. Nothing is saved yet. Click a group to see just those rows:
New recipe. The row has a serving size amount and unit. Gaia creates a published recipe with that serving size and no ingredients.
New shell. The row has only a name. Gaia creates a draft recipe with that name.
Duplicate. You already have a recipe with this name, or the name appears earlier in the same file. The row is skipped. A name that only matches an archived recipe is created as new.
Blank and Error. Empty rows, and rows Gaia can't read, are skipped. Error rows say why.
To try a corrected file, click Upload a different file.
4. Confirm
Click Confirm. The import runs in the background and the page shows its progress. When it's done you'll get a Recipe import finished notification with how many recipes were published, how many drafts were created, and how many couldn't be saved.
Finish your draft recipes
Drafts created from a name alone, and any other recipe missing a serving size, a serving unit or ingredients, are listed on the Pantry's Incomplete tab. Set Show to Incomplete recipes. Each row shows what's missing. Click Fix to open the recipe in the recipe wizard and fill it in.
Until it's finished, a draft can't be published, can't be used inside another recipe, and shows "Incomplete" wherever a serving size would print. A menu that uses it won't pass compliance until it's done.
