How to Use Trigger-Based Outbound

Written by Camila

Trigger-based outbound helps identify relevant prospects based on recent online activity. This guide explains how to activate and configure triggers inside Spear.

Prerequisites

  • Have access to Spear with an active campaign

  • Have a properly defined ICP with active campaign settings

Step 1: Open the Triggers Page

In the left navigation menu, select Triggers. The page displays all available trigger types, including both predefined and custom options.

Step 2: Activate Triggers

Review the list of available triggers and toggle ON the ones you want the system to monitor. Activated triggers begin collecting activity relevant to your campaign's ICP.

Tip: The more triggers enabled, the more opportunities the system can identify.

Available Trigger Types

  1. The Outreach Platform Posts – General: Tracks general engagement on The Outreach Platform: prospects who posted, reposted, commented on, or reacted to any post. Use for broad activity monitoring.

  2. The Outreach Platform Posts – Keywords Based: Tracks engagement containing specific keywords you define. Use "with any of these words" (not "all") to avoid overly narrow results.

  3. The Outreach Platform Posts – User-Selected Posts: Tracks engagement on a specific post URL you manually add. Useful for monitoring a competitor's post, your own content, or a campaign asset.

  4. Reddit Posts – Keywords Based: Tracks prospects who posted or commented on Reddit with your defined keywords.

  5. GitHub Repositories: Identifies prospects from companies that engaged with your repositories or selected external repositories.

  6. Podcast Triggers: Identifies prospects who appeared as a guest, host, or co-host on a podcast episode. Click Edit and add keywords to narrow results.

  7. News Keywords: Identifies prospects from companies mentioned in news articles containing your keywords.

  8. Twitter (X) Posts – Keywords Based: Monitors prospects who commented on Twitter posts containing your defined keywords.

  9. Job Posts – Hiring Activity: Identifies prospects from companies currently hiring for specific roles. Generates up to 5 prospects per day. When you toggle it ON, configure:

    • Select Campaigns: which campaigns this trigger runs on.

    • Position Job Titles: the roles you're looking for (e.g., Head of Sales, DevOps Engineer).

    • Position Posted Within (months): timeframe to target active hiring needs.

    • Keywords: terms that should appear in the job description.

  10. Tech Stack: Identifies prospects from companies using specific technologies you define. The system scans for companies using those tools and surfaces prospects based on your campaign's ICP. To configure: toggle ON, enter technology names (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot, AWS), then click Save. Use this to target companies already using tools that complement or compete with your product.

  11. Influencer Trigger (Profile Posts & Company Posts): Monitor engagement on any profile or company page on The Outreach Platform and reach out to people interacting with their posts.

    • Influencer – Profile Posts: paste a person's profile URL.

    • Influencer – Company Posts: paste a company's page URL.

Step 3: Configure Keywords for Social Triggers

For keyword-based triggers, add relevant terms aligned with your offer. Always use "with any of these words"; selecting "all" makes the search too restrictive. Add several broad terms (e.g., cloud, security, data) to give the system more range while staying contextually relevant.

Step 4: Review Suggestions

Once triggers are active, go to the Suggestions tab and review the prospects surfaced. Approve, deny, or monitor each one based on relevance. From the Monitored prospects tab, you can edit prospect tags directly from the 3-dot menu.

Note: Prospects found through the agentic trigger search can show up to 3 triggers, ranked by strength, with a short reasoning under each. Open the source to double-check before approving. In auto-approve, the strongest trigger is selected automatically.

Expected result

Once your triggers are active and configured, new prospects matching your ICP and trigger activity will start appearing in your Suggestions tab for review.

Tips & best practices

  • Checking Suggestions regularly helps maintain audience relevance, prevent campaign fatigue, and ensure the system prioritizes the highest-quality prospects.
