Your Tone of Voice settings tell Spear's AI how to write on your behalf — the voice, the level of detail, and any do's and don'ts. This is what keeps AI-generated connection requests, follow-ups, and reply suggestions sounding like you instead of a generic bot.
Where to find it
Click your agent in the left menu, then select Tone of voice.
What you can configure
General instructions — apply to every message Spear writes for this profile. This is the core of your tone of voice: how formal or casual you are, what to always mention or avoid, sentence length, and so on.
Connection requests (optional) — click + Add to layer on instructions specific to connection request messages, on top of General.
Replies (optional) — click + Add to layer on instructions specific to how you respond to prospects, on top of General.
Manage voice
Use Manage voice (top right of the Tone of voice panel) to either:
Build your tone of voice with Spear through a guided chat — answer a few questions, and Spear drafts the instructions for you, or
Import your tone of voice from another profile in your organization, so every profile sounds consistent.
Note: if you already had instructions set up before this panel existed, they carried over automatically into General — nothing to re-enter.
Keeping it current
Whenever you update your Tone of Voice, Spear automatically regenerates your existing draft or queued messages so they match the new tone.
Setting your tone of voice is now part of the onboarding flow for new profiles.
If you haven't set it yet, you'll see a home page task and a suggestion in both the Suggestions tab and the agent home page prompting you to set it.
If you manually edit 20 connection request messages, Spear will ask if you'd like to set or update your tone of voice based on those edits.
Why it matters
Every AI-generated message across Spear — message editing suggestions, smart replies, campaign sequences — pulls from these instructions. Vague or missing instructions lead to generic-sounding outreach; specific ones, with real examples of how you'd phrase something, lead to messages that actually sound like you wrote them.
This works together with your Organization Info (company name, value proposition) — together they're the two settings that shape everything the AI writes.
