Use Layouts

Switch layouts, rearrange and resize panels, add apps, and set tab style.

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Everything you can do with the panels in a layout, day to day.

The layout tab strip sits in the top bar of every project and space. From here, you switch between saved arrangements. Within the active one, you can rearrange panels, resize them, collapse them out of the way, and decide what shows in each.

Switch layouts

  1. Click any tab in the layout strip.

  2. Giraffe switches to that arrangement immediately. The active tab is highlighted in its assigned color.

What switching does

Only the panel arrangement changes. This means which panels are open and how they're split. Your project data, Data Table selections, and Map position stay exactly as they were.

Add an app to a panel

  1. Click into the panel where you want the app.

  2. Click the + button on that panel's own tab bar.

  3. Pick an app from the searchable list that opens.

The app opens as a new tab in that same panel. If the panel is empty, it shows an "add an app" button in the middle instead of a + on the tab bar. Click it to open the same picker.

Add as many apps to one panel as you like. They stack as tabs you switch between within that panel.

Rearrange panels

  1. Click and hold a tab.

  2. Drag it toward the panel you want to move it to.

  3. Drop it on that panel's tab bar to move it there. It lands where you drop it, or reorders in place if you drop it back into its own tab bar.

Dropping over the middle of a panel's content works differently. A preview overlay appears with five zones: the center and the four edges.

  • Drop on an edge to split that panel and dock yours alongside it.

  • Drop in the center to merge or swap with the panel underneath.

Drag a panel by its grip, next to the tab bar, to move the whole panel in one go. This moves every tab in it too.

Resize panels

  1. Hover the divider between two panels until the cursor changes.

  2. Click and drag to resize.

  3. Release to lock in the new split.

Drag a panel small enough, and it collapses automatically.

Collapse a panel

  1. Right-click a panel's tab bar.

  2. Choose Collapse.

The panel shrinks to a thin strip that shows just its tab bar. Click a tab in the collapsed strip to expand it again. You can also right-click its tab bar and choose Expand. Collapse isn't available while a panel is fullscreen.

Fullscreen a panel

  1. Right-click a panel's tab bar.

  2. Choose Fullscreen to give that one panel the whole workspace.

  3. Choose Restore to go back to the layout underneath.

Change tab style

  1. Right-click a panel's tab bar and choose Tab style.

  2. Choose Icon, Text, or Text & Icon. Tabs show text by default. Tab style is a personal setting that applies to every panel in every layout.

Move, split, or close a panel

Right-click a panel's tab bar to choose any of these:

  • Tab position: put the tab bar on the Top, Right, Bottom, or Left of the panel.

  • Split vertical or Split horizontal: divide the panel into two side by side or stacked.

  • Close panel: close the panel and its tabs.

Manage an app tab

Right-click an app tab in a panel to choose any of these:

  • Close tab: close this tab.

  • Close others: close every other tab in the panel.

  • Color: give the tab a color.

  • Remove app: remove the app from the project. Giraffe asks you to confirm first.

🚨 Warning: Remove app removes the app from the project for everyone, in every layout.

A panel's right-click menu has more options for each panel.

For a different starting arrangement instead of tweaking this one, add a new layout or start from a layout preset.
