Polygon Tool

Draw a multi-sided shape with unrestricted angles

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

An irregular parcel or an odd-shaped building footprint rarely fits a rectangle. Use the polygon tool to create unique shapes.

  1. Click the Polygon tool in the drawing toolbar, or press P, to draw a closed, multi-sided shape with no usage applied.

  2. Click to place each point. Hold S to snap a point to other geometries. Press G to turn the grid on or off.

  3. Close the shape by clicking your first point, by double-clicking your last point, or by pressing Space or Enter once you've placed at least 3 points. You can also close it by drawing a segment that crosses your own line. Giraffe closes the shape where the lines cross.

After your first point, hold Shift while placing the next point to snap it to the grid or to a right angle from your last segment. Type a number instead of clicking to set that segment's exact length.

Draw a polygon with a usage already applied by selecting the usage from the Buildings, Land Use, Landscape, or Roads and Parking tool, then clicking Polygon in the shape picker.
