Roads and Parking Tool

Draw roads and parking

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Road widths and parking counts shape how much of a site is left to build on, and parking ratios feed straight into your feasibility numbers. The Roads and Parking tool shortcuts to all of the Road and Parking Usages in your project template. In the drawing toolbar, this button's icon looks like a road with a dashed center line.

If your project template doesn't have the usage you need, check the Marketplace: open the Content Library (from the main menu, or the + on any panel tab), click the Marketplace tab, then choose Usages.

Roads

Road properties: Road Width (default 5) and Footpath Width (default 2).

  1. Click the Path tool in the drawing toolbar.

  2. Select a road usage from the dropdown.

  3. Click on the map to draw a line for the road.

  4. Set the Road Width and Footpath Width in the properties palette.

Parking

Any usage with "Carpark" in its name shows up in the Path dropdown. Giraffe's default template ships three:

  • Carpark - On Grade: calculated as Paved Area, treated as impervious surface in site coverage.

  • Carpark - Multi-Deck: calculated as a Building, included in GBA/GFA. Set Levels and Floor-to-Floor to control height.

  • Carpark - Underground: calculated as Basement area, not included in site coverage. Giraffe doesn't visualize it below grade. The math engine still calculates it correctly, based on the property values saved on the usage.

Your project's actual list depends on your template. Renaming, adding, or removing carpark usages works fine: the dropdown always reflects your project's own usages, and each one's calculation behavior comes from its underlying type, not its name.

  1. Click the Path tool in the drawing toolbar.

  2. Select a carpark usage from the dropdown.

  3. Click on the map to draw a rectangle for the parking area.

The draw-bar only offers a rectangle for carpark usages. To draw one as a polygon, line, or point instead, draw a plain shape with the Polygon, Polyline, or Point tool, then select the carpark usage from the usage dropdown in Quick Properties.

Add parking bays

Once you've drawn a parking area, click Add parking bays in the Property Editor to generate bay-line geometry automatically. This attaches Giraffe's built-in parking flow to your shape.

This button only appears on a plain carpark polygon that doesn't already have a flow applied.

Once applied, tune the bay layout and zones in the panel that appears. See Parking Lots for the full node reference.
