Extruding & Push/Pull

Reshape geometries by extruding edges or pushing and pulling faces in 3D

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Test a bigger footprint or a taller building in seconds by pulling on the geometry itself, instead of redrawing it. Use extrusion handles to move one edge of a shape, or push/pull mode to reshape buildings in 3D.

Extrude an edge

A straight side of a geometry is called an edge. Control points sit at each end of an edge.

To show a geometry's edges and control points, double-click the geometry.

OR

right-click it and choose Edit Shape

OR

select the Vertex Edit tool in the draw bar.

Click and drag an edge to extrude it. The edge moves parallel to where it started, and the edges on either side stretch to meet it.

  • Type a number while you drag to set an exact distance.

  • Hold Shift to round the distance to 0.5 m (or 1 ft).

  • Press - to extrude away from your mouse.

  • Hold S to snap to other geometries.

  • Press Esc to cancel the drag.

Hold Shift, Cmd, or Option/Alt and the extrusion handles hide, so you can reach what's underneath.

Add a point to an edge

Hover over an edge and click the dot at its midpoint to add a control point there.

Push/pull mode

Push/pull reshapes geometries in 3D. Click the Modify tool in the drawing toolbar and choose Push / pull, or press Shift+G. You don't need to select anything first.

In push/pull mode, the face, edge, or point under your mouse highlights. Click and drag it to push or pull it. Push/pull stays on until you press Esc.

Push/pull works on single polygons. Lines, points, and geometries made of several shapes can't be pushed or pulled.

If you push a wall far enough to cut the shape in two, each part becomes its own geometry.

🚨 Warning: Pushing a wall all the way through a geometry deletes it.

Move a corner or edge

In push/pull mode, drag a corner or an edge at the base of a geometry to move it in plan.

  • Hold Shift to lock the move to the grid.

  • Press Tab while you drag to lock the current direction.

Geometries that share that corner at the same height move with it.

Stack a new geometry on a roof

In push/pull mode, hold Option/Alt and drag a roof upward. Giraffe adds a new geometry on top and extrudes it, one level at a time for levels-based buildings. Release without dragging to cancel.

Split a geometry

In push/pull mode, hold Option/Alt and click an edge.

  • Click a flat edge at the base to add a control point there.

  • Click a vertical edge to split the geometry into two stacked geometries at that height. For levels-based buildings, the split snaps to whole levels.
