Appearance Properties

Change how geometries look on the map.

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Color-code a site plan so anyone can read it at a glance: residential in one color, open space in another, the parcels you're chasing outlined in red. Appearance properties control how a geometry looks on the map. They live in the Appearance section of the properties palette.

Appearance properties don't change any calculations. You can use them as filters in Analytics measures.

Appearance properties

The Appearance section of the properties palette shows these properties for every geometry:

  • Color: the fill color.

  • Fill Opacity: how see-through the fill is, from 0 to 100%.

  • Line Color: the outline color.

  • Line Width: the outline thickness.

  • Point Radius: the size of a point on the map.

Lines have no fill, so Color and Fill Opacity only change polygons.

Change a color

  1. Select a geometry.

  2. In the Appearance section of the properties palette, click the swatch next to Color or Line Color.

  3. Pick a swatch from your project's palette, drag the color picker, or type a hex code.

  4. Click away to close the picker and keep the color.

OR

Type a hex code straight into the box next to the swatch, then press Enter.

The slider under the color picker sets opacity. It changes Fill Opacity for Color and Line Opacity for Line Color.

A half-filled swatch means the color comes from the geometry's usage. A full swatch means you set it on the geometry. Hover over the property's name and click Revert to default to go back to the usage's color.

Open advanced appearance settings

Hover over the Appearance header in the properties palette and click the adjustments icon to open Advanced appearance settings. It holds:

  • Line Opacity: how see-through the outline is.

  • Dash: a dash pattern for the outline. Type a comma-separated list of dash and gap lengths, such as 4,2.

  • Line Cap: the shape of a line's ends. Choose butt, round, or square.

  • Line Join: the shape of a line's corners. Choose miter, round, or bevel.

  • Start Arrow and End Arrow: add an arrowhead to a line.

  • Shiny: give the geometry a shiny finish.
