👉 Once you have imported your accounting data into your account, they will be automatically categorized by our algorithm under the “Data -> Financial Overview Module”.
Categorization is a key element to guarantee the most precise estimation of your emissions. Make sure you choose the right category before validating each transaction.
You will need to review the transactions and:
validate the transactions which are correctly categorized;
update the category for the transactions that were miscategorized;
flag activity duplicates.
🎥: We created this short video explaining categorization:
1. Step-by-step categorization
1. Step-by-step categorization
Go to the “Data -> Financial Overview” tab of the platform. Make sure the right period is selected in the top left corner of the page.
The “Categorization Score” gauge is your progress indicator for this task. It increases when you validate or categorize transactions.
Follow your progress with this indicator: to produce a report, Greenly recommends achieving at least 80% categorization score, but the more the better!
On this page, your transactions are presented one by one, along with categories' suggestions.
For each transaction, you can either:
Confirm the category currently chosen (1st suggestion);
Choose another category from the list of suggestions;
Navigate the menu of all available categories - also accessible on this page.
2. Overview of all expenses
2. Overview of all expenses
When you reach the goal of 80% categorization score, or at any point before that, you can also use the Overview tab to access a list of all your expenses and review them all together.
The list of your transactions can be found below the graphs.

Select “Sort by relevance” in the sort options, above the list of your transactions. The transactions on top of the table are the most important to validate to increase your categorization score.
To act on one or multiple expenses at once, you need to select them and choose one of the following options:
Option 1: For each transaction in the list, if the selected category is correct, click on the "Validate" button to confirm the category.
Option 2: If the emission factor associated by the algorithm is incorrect, you can click on "Recategorize and validate X transactions" to assign the chosen category to the selected transaction
Option 3: To avoid double counting, expenses corresponding to activities that have been included on a different module in the platform must be marked as "Activity Data Duplicate" as well as categorized.
💡 Tip: You can use the search bar to quickly find a group of transactions by a supplier name or keyword. You can select all the found transactions with the "Select all" button, and validate the transactions in one click.
If you have any doubt regarding a transaction, you can leave a comment, and a climate expert will review it.

Important: Greenly uses the exchange rate corresponding to the profile year (until 2023)
Use Case 1: If a transaction is in a currency other than EUR (e.g., USD) and no matching Market Emission Factor (MEF) exists for that currency (like Exiobase), the French MEF for the Purchase Category is converted to the transaction currency. The exchange rate used corresponds to the profile year (e.g., 2023, USD -> EUR).
Use Case 2: In the categorization module, there may be transactions in different currencies. The “total amount” displayed at the top right is calculated using exchange rates that align with the profile year.
