Beyond creating simple, manual shortcut buttons, the real power of iOS Shortcuts lies in its Automations feature. An Automation is a special type of shortcut that runs automatically in the background when a specific "trigger" event happens on your iPhone or Apple Watch.

The Logic: "When This Happens... Do This."

The most important thing to understand is that every automation has two parts:

  • The Trigger (The "When"): This is the event that your iPhone's operating system (iOS) "listens for." These triggers are built-in by Apple.

Examples: "When my 'Wake Up' alarm is stopped," "When I arrive at the gym," or "When an Apple Watch workout ends."

  • The Action (The "Do This"): This is what you want Habitify to do when the trigger occurs. These are the Habitify shortcuts (like "Check-in," "Log Progress," etc.) that you've seen in the Shortcuts app.

Your goal is to connect these two things.

How to Set up the Automations with Habitify

It would be easer if you have the Habitify shortcuts ready. To read the details on all types of shortcuts with Habitify, you can read our article about Create Habitify Shortcuts on iOS.

  2. Tap the "Automation" tab at the bottom center of the screen.

  3. Tap the '+' icon to start a new automation.

  4. You will first be asked to Choose a Trigger (e.g., "Alarm," "Arrive," "App").

Step 1: Choose Your Apple Trigger

  1. On the "New Automation" screen, scroll down and tap on "Apple Watch Workout".

  2. Select "Ends". (You can also choose a specific workout type, like "Running").

  3. Make sure "Run Immediately" is selected.

  4. Tap "Next".

Step 2: Choose Your Habitify Action

  1. Tap "Add Action".

  2. Search for Habitify and select "Add Note to Habit".

  3. Tap the "Note" field and type in your note (e.g., "Workout logged!").

  4. Tap the "Habit" field and select your "Workout" habit.

  5. Tap "Done".

*Your automation is now: When my Apple Watch Workout ends, run the "Add Note (Workout logged!) to (Workout)" action. *

Other Automation Ideas to Try

  • Trigger: Arrive at [Your Gym's Address] β†’ Action: Start Timer for your "Workout" habit.

  • Trigger: App > Kindle > Is Opened β†’ Action: Start Timer for your "Read a Book" habit.

  • Trigger: Bluetooth > Connects to [Your Car's Name] β†’ Action: Log Progress (1 time) for your "Commute" habit.

We hope this clears up the concept and helps you build powerful new automations!
