Stacking your habit to schedule your day more effectively with habit stacking

Habit Stacking is a powerful method that involves pairing your new habit with an existing one, rather than associating it with a specific time and location.

How it works

The formula for habit stacking is simple:

After/ before [CURRENT HABIT], I will do [NEW HABIT].

For example:

  • After I pour my coffee each morning, I meditate for one minute.

  • After I remove my work shoes, I will immediately change into my workout clothes.

By linking new habits with existing ones, you establish clear cues that prompt you to perform the new behavior. This way, you don't have to rely solely on the time of day to remember your habits.

The more you repeat the habit stacking without breaking the pattern, the faster the new habit becomes ingrained in your routine.

How to build a stack of habits

  • Before you start, ensure you have a habit already created in your habit list.

  • Access the habit-stacking settings, which are found in the same place where you set reminders for your habit.

  • Choose an existing habit from your list that you want to link with the new habit.

  • Select a triggering event from the linked habit that will prompt the notification for this new habit. You have two options:

    • Based on the linked habit's status.

    • Based on the reminders set for the linked habit.

  • Determine when the habit-stacking reminders will appear about the triggering event:

    • Before the triggering event (suitable for reminders based on linked habit reminders).

    • Immediately, at the same time as the triggering event.

    • After the triggering event.

By leveraging habit stacking, you can effortlessly integrate new habits into your existing routine, making adopting and maintaining positive behaviors easier.
