B
Written by Brooke Schuyler

The Trade Tab provides a comprehensive view of global import and export activity for each commodity. It highlights the top ten exporting and importing countries over the past decade and gives users insight into the trade policies, tariffs, and restrictions that influence commodity flows. This tab is designed for anyone who needs to monitor global trade dynamics and understand how they affect availability, pricing, and supply strategies.

Note: The trade tab is only available for exchange-traded commodities.

Key Features

Import and Export Information

The Trade Tab allows you to explore both export and import historical data for each commodity.

  • Use the toggle at the top of the section to switch between Exports (default) and Imports.

  • View the top trading countries and their volumes at a glance.

This helps users quickly identify which countries dominate the market and how their roles have changed over time.

By understanding these historical trends, users can better anticipate future trade movements and adjust their strategies accordingly. For example, recognizing an increase in exports from a specific country might signal a growing market influence, potentially leading to shifts in global pricing or supply chains.

Conversely, a decline in exports could indicate potential supply constraints, prompting users to seek alternative sources or adjust procurement plans. You can also determine which countries dominate the market and which are emerging as significant players. This insight can guide decisions on where to focus sourcing efforts or which markets to target for export.

Import and Export Volumes Graph

This graph shows total trading volumes for the top ten countries involved in importing or exporting the commodity, as well as on a global level. You can see the export values in metric tons for the past ten years, the percentage change from the previous year and view a trend line to see general whether exports are increasing or decreasing.

This graph helps you:

  • Compare how volumes have shifted over time

  • Identify emerging export or import markets

  • Spot declining contributors that may signal supply constraints

This view is especially useful for tracking long-term structural changes in trade flows.

Top Exporters and Importers Chart

This chart displays a year-by-year ranking of the top ten exporters or importers for the past decade. For each country, you can see:

  • Its share of the global export or import market

  • Actual volume numbers

This chart helps users:

  • Select any year from the past ten years

  • Identify countries gaining or losing influence in global markets

  • Understand how market power has shifted over time

  • Determine where to focus sourcing or selling efforts

  • Anticipate future trade movements based on long-term patterns

For example, a steady rise in exports from a specific country may signal increasing market dominance, while a decline could indicate upcoming supply issues.

Trade News and Policy Updates

The Trade Tab also includes a dedicated stream of real-time news related to:

  • Import and export activity

  • Tariffs and trade agreements

  • Bans, restrictions, and regulatory changes

  • Logistics or geopolitical events affecting trade routes

Staying current with this information helps users understand sudden shifts in supply chains. For example:

  • A new tariff may increase import costs or disrupt procurement plans

  • The lifting of a trade ban may create new sourcing opportunities

  • A diplomatic agreement may open new export routes

These updates keep users informed about policy and regulatory developments that can directly impact pricing and availability.
