How does Helios Work?

How Helios Works

Written by Brooke Schuyler

Helios is a climate-driven intelligence platform built to help ag commodity buyers, traders, and risk teams forecast price movements and detect supply disruptions—before they hit the market. It achieves this by combining advanced AI with one of the world's most comprehensive agricultural climate risk datasets.

Here’s how the system works, step by step:

1. We Collect Climate and Market Data Daily

  • Helios ingests real-time climate data from over a dozen high-resolution, global weather systems—including NASA, NOAA, DWD (Germany), and more. We track:

  • Temperature, precipitation, drought, and heat events

  • Daily conditions for 70+ commodities in over 90% of global growing regions

  • Maritime, elevation, and soil moisture data

  • We map the globe into 4 million hexagonal zones, each grouped into one of 81 climate profiles. This allows us to model how regional climate affects crop outcomes over time.

2. We Detect Climate-Driven Risks Before They Escalate

  • Using over 20 years of historical data, our system learns to identify anomalies—like unexpected droughts, excess rainfall, or temperature extremes—that are likely to impact crop yields.

  • We normalize these events into simple, comparable risk categories: “heat stress”, “excess rainfall”, “drought”, “unseasonably cold”.

  • This becomes the foundation of our proprietary climate risk metric: WA%R™ – Weighted Average Percent of Risk.

  • WA%R quantifies the percentage of growing regions under climate stress, weighted by production share. It allows us to flag regional and market-level supply risks early.

3. We Model Price Impact and Supply Disruption

  • Once risk is identified, Helios uses machine learning to forecast:

  • How climate anomalies are likely to impact yields, availability, and price

  • When the effects will likely show up in futures or physical markets

  • Where market pressure is building—before it shows up in mainstream terminals

We aggregate insights at the location, region, and market level—factoring in seasonality, export share, and demand conditions.

4. We Deliver Actionable Forecasts in Multiple Formats

Clients receive insights through:

  • CommodiTrack: our self-onboarding Saas platform that gives users access to all Helios insights, 24/7

  • APIs: Real-time integration into internal tools and workflows

  • CSV downloads: Raw or pre-weighted data for custom modeling

  • Weekly PDF reports: Visualized, narrated forecasts per crop + country

  • Horizon (our AI supply chain analyst): Natural language answers grounded in our data

  • Customizable reports and alerts via Looker: for users interested in alerts and reports that are more specific to their individual needs, they are able to have reports automatically generated for them on a daily, weekly or monthly basis

All of this is updated nightly to keep insights current, with forecasts extending up to 12 months out.

5. We Prioritize Security, Transparency, and Flexibility

  • All data is processed on Google Cloud Platform, with encryption at rest and in transit

  • Clients can choose between raw signals (ideal for data teams) or pre-weighted insights (for strategy and procurement use)

  • Every insight is auditable, with full data provenance and documentation
