Offering subscriptions in a bundle

Show subscription options inside your bundle using selling plans from your subscription app, and control how renewals treat your bundle discount.

Written by Eddie Lavandera

Bundle subscriptions let a customer choose between a one-time purchase and a recurring one, inside the bundle block. By the end of this you will have subscription options showing on your bundle. The prerequisite is the important part: Atlas does not create subscription plans. It displays selling plans that already exist, set up in a subscription app such as Shopify Subscriptions or Recharge.

In this article:

What you need first

A subscription app with selling plans configured for the products in your bundle.

Atlas states the boundary itself when a product has none:

This product has no subscription plans yet. To offer subscriptions, set them up in a third-party app first. Our bundler only links to those plans, it doesn't create or manage them.

⚠️ Atlas does not create, price or manage subscription plans, and cannot fix a subscription problem. If pricing, frequency or renewals are wrong, the fix is in your subscription app, not in Atlas.

Step 1: Enable subscriptions

  1. Open your bundle and go to the Subscriptions tab.

  2. Turn on Enable subscriptions.

Subscription options in a bundle unlock recurring revenue and build customer loyalty.

Step 2: Position and label

Setting

What it does

Position

Above items or Below items, relative to the bundle offers

Layout

How the options are arranged

One time title

Subscription title

One time subtitle

Text alignment

Checked by default

Which option is preselected

Hide radio buttons

Show subscription box first

Show line divider between plans

Show subscription save badge

💡 Say what the customer gets rather than naming the mechanism. "Subscribe and save 15%, skip or cancel anytime" converts better than "Subscription", because it answers the two questions everyone has: what do I save, and can I get out.

Think carefully about Checked by default. Preselecting subscription lifts subscription rates and also lifts cancellations and complaints from customers who did not notice. Preselecting one-time is the safer default for a new store.

Step 3: Pricing display

Setting

What it does

Show pricing on subscription cards

Shows the price on each option

Apply subscription discount to offer prices

Shows the discounted subscription price on each bundle offer row when subscription is selected

Show compare-at price (strikethrough)

Shows the crossed-out original

The help text for the middle one explains it: "Show the discounted subscription price on each bundle offer row when the subscription is selected."

Turn it on. Without it, a customer choosing subscription still sees one-time prices on the offer rows, which is confusing and makes the saving invisible at the moment it matters.

Step 4: Benefits list

Show subscription benefits list adds a short list under the subscription option.

Add lines with Add benefit and write each into Enter benefit text. Show check icons puts a tick beside each.

Use it to answer objections rather than to repeat features. "Skip or cancel any time", "Free shipping on every delivery", "Change your delivery date whenever you like".

The renewal setting that matters

Bundle discount first order only, with the help text: "When enabled, free items from Buy X Get Y offers won't be included in subscription renewals."

This decides whether your bundle's giveaways repeat on every recurring order.

Setting

Effect

On

The customer gets the free items once, on the first order

Off

Free items repeat with every renewal

⚠️ Leaving this off on a buy-two-get-one-free bundle means you ship a free unit on every single renewal, forever. Check this setting before publishing any subscription bundle that includes free items.

Styling

Subscription options have their own colour group, separate from the bundle's: background, selected background, hover background, title text, subtitle text, border, radio button, border radius, border thickness, price and compare-at price colours, plus badge background and text, gradient support, and a check icon colour for the benefits list.

Sizing controls: Vertical card minimum height, with the help Set to 0 for auto height based on content, plus Vertical spacing between cards and Horizontal spacing between cards.

ℹ️ Set the minimum height to 0 unless you have a specific reason not to. A fixed height that suits your longest label leaves awkward gaps under the shorter one.

If no subscription options appear

Work through these in order.

  1. Check the product has selling plans. Open it in Shopify and confirm a subscription plan is attached. This is the cause the vast majority of the time.

  2. Check the plan is active in your subscription app.

  3. Check Enable subscriptions is on for this bundle and the bundle has been published since.

  4. Check the right products. Selling plans are per product, so a bundle spanning several products will only show subscriptions on the ones that have plans.

See Why don't subscription upgrades appear for my product?, which covers the same underlying cause for the cart drawer.
