Payment icons are the small card and wallet logos shown near the checkout button. They exist to reassure customers that their payment method is accepted before they commit to checkout. Enabling them takes under a minute.
In this article:
Step 1: Enable it
In the cart drawer editor, select
Payment Icons.Select
Activate.
Until then: "Payment icons are not shown because it is disabled. Activate to show it in your cart. You can preview changes before saving."
Step 2: Choose your icons
The section is titled Trusted Payment Icons, with the instruction: Drag icons between boxes to include or exclude them.
Two boxes:
Box | Contains |
| Icons you are not showing |
| Icons that appear in the drawer |
Drag between them to include or exclude, and drag within Selected Icons to reorder. With nothing selected the preview shows No icons.
The list is fixed. It does not adapt to the payment methods you have enabled in Shopify, so choosing the right ones is up to you. All 23 are available to every store:
Afterpay | Dwolla | Meta Pay |
American Express | Forbrugsforeningen | PayPal |
Apple Pay | Google Pay | Shop Pay |
Bitcoin | iDEAL | SOFORT |
Dankort | JCB | UnionPay |
Diners Club | Klarna | Visa |
Discover | Litecoin | |
Dogecoin | Maestro | |
Mastercard |
Which icons to show
Show what you actually accept, and nothing else. Because the list is the same for every store rather than drawn from your Shopify settings, nothing stops you showing a method you do not take. Mirror the payment methods enabled in your Shopify payment settings.
Put the most-used first. Order matters at a glance, and most customers only register the first two or three.
Include local methods for your main markets. A customer in the Netherlands looking for iDEAL, or in Germany for a bank transfer option, is reassured by seeing it and put off by not.
Do not show everything. A wall of a dozen icons reads as clutter and pushes the checkout button down the drawer. Four to six is plenty.
💡 Open your Shopify payment settings in another tab and match the list exactly. It takes two minutes and removes any chance of promising a method you do not take.
Keeping it honest
⚠️ Only show icons for payment methods you genuinely accept. A customer who reaches checkout and cannot find the method your cart advertised is a lost order and a support ticket, and in some markets advertising a payment method you do not offer is a consumer protection problem.
Check again after any change to your payment providers. Icons configured six months ago can quietly become wrong when you switch processors or drop a wallet.
Where they appear
In the footer of the cart drawer, near the checkout button, which is where they do their job: at the moment of commitment rather than earlier.
They inherit the drawer's footer styling. There are no separate colour controls for the icons themselves, so if they look wrong against your background, adjust Cart Footer in the Colors section.
ℹ️ Payment icons are the cheapest module in the drawer. They take a minute, they have no downside if you list them accurately, and for a store customers do not yet recognise they measurably reduce hesitation at checkout.
