How do I open an investment account?
How do I open an investment account?
Updated over 8 months ago

To open an investment account on the Vest app, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Have a valid tax identification number (e.g., the Social Security Number in the US, the CPF in Brazil, or the Número de Identificación Tributaria for some Spanish-speaking countries)

  • Have a valid government-issued national ID or international passport

  • Have a legal residential address.

If you meet the requirements above and have your valid ID at the ready, simply follow the steps below to open your investment account:

  1. Open the Vest app

  2. Tap on the "Portfolio" tab

  3. Start the account opening process

  4. Submit all documents and answer the questions! We know it's quite a bureaucratic process, but it's required by regulatory institutions and is key to verifying your identity.

Some useful tips:

⚡ When prompted, make sure you enter your full name exactly the way it is displayed on your government-issued ID

⚡ When entering your address, make sure you have entered it completely, remembering to include street number and any other important details

⚡ The identity document needs to be:

  • Non-expired: we understand that an expired document is accepted in some countries, but in compliance with US regulations, we require a non-expired ID to move forward

  • Legible and in color: you'll need to take a photo of the physical, actual passport or ID. Some countries allow digital forms of ID and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Generally, photos taken of a screen will be rejected as we can't be sure of their authenticity

  • Unedited and uncensored in any way:

    • Make sure you frame your document properly when taking the photo. A tip is to check that all four corners of the document are visible

    • Try to take the photo of your document in good, natural lighting, and without flash

    • If you are going to take a photo of your government-issued digital ID, you need to either take a photo of the ID within the official app or take a photo of the PDF exported from the official app. This is necessary to prove the digital ID's authenticity.

  • Something's still not right? If you are sure your document meets all the requirements yet was still rejected, it could be due to one of these common errors, where your submitted image:

    • Was too blurry or dark

    • Had glares or reflections

    • Did not show the entire document, because some parts were cropped off or, more commonly, covered with a finger

⚡ Selfie time! Taking selfies is fun, but the one you submit to us needs to:

  • Look like you, i.e., be similar to the photo on your ID

  • Show only your face, with a neutral expression

  • Be taken in good lighting - photos taken in the dark will automatically be rejected.
