This article explains how to place a sell market order, which is an order to sell a stock immediately while the stock market is open.

Step by step:

  1. Navigate to the stock or asset's details page. Here you can find the historical performance of stocks, statistics and indexes, and other useful information to consider when buying or selling a stock.

  2. At the bottom of the screen, click "⇆ Invest" and then "Sell (asset ticker)"

  3. Enter the amount in dollars you would like to sell of the asset, and we'll show you the equivalent estimated share amount. If you want to sell everything, click "Sell all"

  4. Click "Next" and confirm that all details are correct. If you want to edit your order, just click the button in the upper left corner to return.

  5. Click "Submit sell order" to submit your order.

Important:

  • You can still place sell orders while the market is closed, but those orders will be executed only when the market reopens. To learn how to cancel a sell order that is pending (because markets are closed), click here

  • The ticker of an asset or ticker symbol is an abbreviation or code used to uniquely identify publicly traded assets in the stock market

  • All market orders are executed on the best deals available in the United States stock market currently (NBBO quote)

  • It is worth mentioning that the last negotiated price is not necessarily the price at which your sell order will be executed.
